Typically, up to 8 high school students (9th through 12th grade) may form a team. Each school may sponsor multiple teams. 5-8 students on a team is recommended. Each team requires at least one teacher or chaperone, and the sponsoring teacher must register their school in advance. Students with experience solving mathematical puzzles will have an advantage in competition, but this team-based event can be enjoyed by most students regardless of background. Please contact Julia Webster, jwebste2@unca.edu if you have interested students, but not enough to form a team and we will combine your students with another team.
Teams will be using the ClueKeeper app to enter their puzzle solutions. Other than that, technology is not allowed! It is only fun and fair if we are all only using our brains! In preparation you may want to have snacks and school supplies at the ready!
Students will have fun regardless of their previous experience with math puzzles. That said, you can find a teaser puzzle and links to old competition puzzles at the MaPP Puzzle Page.
It is held on several campuses throughout the country, including the University of North Carolina Asheville.
$20 per student. This covers pizza lunch and access to national MaPP materials.
Checks can be mailed in advance. You may also bring a check or cash the day of the event. Make checks out to UNCA Math Department.
