Severe Weather Outreach Day is a new initiative to raise awareness at UM of weather hazards. This year, Severe Wx Outreach Day will be on Wednesday, April 17. Our theme is Lightning: Staying Safe in the Lightning Strike Capital of the US.
We invite many speakers each year to explore different areas in meteorology. In the past, we have had:
Brian McNoldy, RSMAS senior research associate
Lisa Bucci, NOAA Hurricane Hunter
Heather Zons, recent UM alum and weather producer at the Weather Channel
Megan Linkin, Swiss Re global reinsurance
Vanessa Alonso, UM alum and meteorologist for KQ2 St. Joseph
Each year, a small group of UAMS students travels to the American Meteorological Society's Annual Meeting and to represent our club, present research, and network with professionals at the Student Conference. We also tour the National Hurricane Center every year.
Aside from these, additional trips we've taken as a group include:
CBS4 Miami News Studio in Doral (2019)
Frost Science Museum (2022)
AOML/HRD (2023)
"SKYWARN® is a volunteer program with between 350,000 and 400,000 trained severe weather spotters. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service."
