This square located outside Hornbake Plaza was dedicated in November of 2015 to Maryland-born abolitionist and scholar Frederick Douglass (1818-1895). The bronze statue of Douglass, renowned human rights activist, was created by Andrew Edwards. After five years of development and planning, Facilities installed the 8 ft tall, half ton statue in front of Hornbake Library. At its dedication the statue was met with community support and protests. The demonstrators were students of the University of Maryland led by BSU. Following Douglass's legacy, students rallied for better treatment of UMD's black and minority students.
