Sometimes it is necessary to find care on short notice, either for physical or mental health purposes. It is often a good practice to be prepared in advance for an event like this and have a plan of action in mind.
When in doubt, call 911: It goes without saying that in a true emergency, if there is any doubt, you should always call 911 and speak to a professional who will be able to help guide you through your emergency.
Keep in mind that the University Health Center does not have a late-night or after-hours emergency center. However, there is an after-hours nurse line where you can get advice on next steps. Call 301-314-9386 to speak to a nurse.
Urgent Care: If your are not in immediate danger but still need care on short notice, urgent cares can be a good resource. It is advised that you look up a list of urgent cares in your area and investigate whether they will accept your insurance and are in-network (out-of-network urgent care can lead to very expensive bills for seemingly minor procedures). Even if you know which urgent care you would like to use, it is often advisable to call ahead and make sure that they have the services you require on any given night (e.g., not all urgent cares have x-ray machines, and, occasionally, even those that do will have not have a technician available on a given night).
If possible, avoid the urgent care on Route 1 near the fire station unless it is necessary; students in the department have reported some predatory pricing practices in the past.
