Umbra (“the App”) is an AI powered reflective journaling tool designed to support emotional insight, self-awareness, and personal growth. Umbra respects your privacy, your data, and the sacredness of your inner world. This Privacy Policy explains what information the App collects, how it is used, and how it is protected.

1. Information We Collect & How It Is Stored

Local-First Data Storage (No Cloud Storage)

Umbra is fundamentally an offline, local-first journaling application. We do not operate a central server to store your journal entries.

Everything you write, record, or create stays on your device unless you choose to send it through the AI Chat feature.

1.1 Journal Entries & Metadata (Stored Only on Your Device)

The following information is stored locally on your device using secure storage (Hive):

• Written journal entries
  
  

• Audio recordings (if used)
  
  

• Emotional tags
  
  

• Timestamps
  
  

• Optional personal metadata (e.g., your name or zodiac sign)
  
  

Umbra does not upload, sync, or store this data on external servers.
Umbra does not sell, share, or mine your local data.

Deleting the app will delete all locally stored data.

1.2 AI Chat Messages (Temporary Third-Party Processing)

When you use the “Go Deeper” feature, Umbra sends only the following to the AI model:

• The message you type
  
  

• The journal entry content related to the chat
  
  

• A brief, temporary chat history for context
  
  

How It’s Processed:
Your data is transmitted through a secure Cloudflare Worker to the OpenAI API.

Data Protection Guarantee:

• Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS)
  
  

• Data is used only to generate your response
  
  

• Data is processed ephemerally
  
  

• Data is not stored
  
  

• Data is not used to train AI models
  
  

• Umbra does not retain or log this information
  
  

2. How We Use Your Information

Umbra uses your information solely to support the App’s core features:

• Saving and displaying your journal entries
  
  

• Providing emotional depth analysis and pattern insights
  
  

• Generating AI reflections when you request them
  
  

Umbra does not use your data for advertising or analytics.

3. Data Sharing

Umbra only shares the text you explicitly send during AI Chat.

Shared With:

• OpenAI (via Cloudflare Worker)
  
  

Purpose:

• To deliver the AI-generated response you requested
  
  

Umbra does not sell your data.
Umbra does not share your local entries or audio with any third parties.

4. Your Choices & Controls

Because Umbra is local-first, you maintain complete control.

You may:

• Delete individual entries
  
  

• Delete audio files
  
  

• Clear emotional insights
  
  

• Remove all data by uninstalling the App
  
  

Umbra does not maintain backups. Deletion is immediate and permanent.

5. Security Practices

Umbra includes:

• No cloud syncing
  
  

• No analytics or tracking
  
  

• No third-party advertising SDKs
  
  

Your private reflections stay in your hands.

6. Children’s Privacy

Umbra is not intended for children under 13.
We do not knowingly collect data from children.

Parents may use Umbra to journal about their children.

7. Updates to This Policy

Any changes to this Privacy Policy will appear here with an updated date. Continued use of the App signifies acceptance of the updated policy.

Subscription & Payments

Umbra Insight offers an optional auto-renewable subscription called Umbra Premium at $4.99/month. Payment is charged to your Apple ID account at confirmation of purchase. The subscription automatically renews unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. You can manage and cancel your subscription in your iPhone Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions. No refunds are provided for the current subscription period.
