Q: I have never taken lessons before. Can I still join the team?
A: Yes of course! We actually encourage people who have never ridden before to join the team as we love getting new members. Also IHSA is able to provide an opportunity for new riders to participate in the walk/trot classes. Lessons at Infinity farm will be geared towards your skill level.
Q: Do I have to have my own horse to ride on the team?
A: No, you don't because the lesson program at our coaches barn provides horses. At shows the host barn will be supplying the horses for you.
Q: How much does it cost to be on the team?
A: This is a club sport so that means there are some fees you will be expected to pay even if you're not going to show. These fees include semester dues, lessons, show fees, and IHSA memberships. Don't let the price scare you! We do fundraising activities to help alleviate some of the cost. If you have any concerns about the cost don't be afraid to contact us!
Cost Break Down:
Weekly lessons are required and are paid four at a time.
Private - 45 minutes ---> $70
Semi-private (2 riders) - 60 minutes ---> $60
Group (3 or more riders) - 60 minutes ---> $50
Semester fee is $55, but may go up from year to year
IHSA yearly fee is $45 (showing is not required)
IHSA shows are $65 per class with a $50 coaching fee.
1 class is $115 per show
2 classes are $230 per show
Transportation and hotel is covered by the club, but food is not
Add on the cost of any riding/showing gear that will need to be bought
Q: Are there tryouts for the team?
A: There are no tryouts for the team as we accept everyone! There is what we call rider evaluations so our coach and captains can determine what level of riding you're at. This is done for everyone even if you are not going to show and just want to take lessons as this will help everyone to stay safe. This is usually done during the first week of the semester.
Q: What are the IHSA shows like?
A: The University of Maine competes in Hunt Seat Equitation shows against other schools in Zone 1 Region 2. IHSA shows are designed to level the playing field for riders by having riders compete on randomly assigned horses provided by the host school. Riders can compete in both flat and over fences classes depending on where their IHSA placement exam has assigned them.
Riders competing in each division may earn points both for their team and as individuals. Team points are used to determine the champion team of the show (and cumulatively to determine the yearly regional champion) while individual points are accumulated, allowing riders to move up divisions as well as qualify for Regional, Zone, and National Finals competitions.
Q: Can I have lessons, but not compete in shows?
A: We have two aspects to the team. In the club team, we encourage riders to ride as often as they wish to build their knowledge and skills (weekly lessons are required). We also have a show team that attends competitions (showing is not required).
Q: Who should I contact if I want more information or would like to visit the barn?
A: We would love for you to come out to see us at UMaine! If you want to see the barn or talk to one of teammates for more information you can contact us at umaineequestrianteam1@gmail.com or send a DM through Instagram or Facebook.
