Some machines can only have certain wipes used on them, but GREY top wipes are generally universally approved
Before you start scanning, and after each study, clean each probe that you use.
Before using the wipes, physically remove all the gel left on the probe with a hand towel or washcloth.
With the wipes, start where the probe cable connects to the machine, and then clean out towards the probe.
Spend 30-60 seconds cleaning the probe itself when you get to the end of the cord
If a large amount of blood, pus, or other bodily fluid get directly on the probe, it will need to be sent for high-level disinfection
Grab a sticker from the patient whose fluid(s) got on the probe
Disconnect the probe from the machine
Remove all the ultrasound gel and bodily fluid with a towel or washcloth
Wipe the probe down with a GREY top wipe as described above
Bring the disconnected probe and the patient sticker to the CHARGE NURSE by the doc box, and ask it to be sent for "high-level disinfection"
To prevent contamination, use a probe cover for all procedures (including all vascular access) and for any scans on or near non-intact skin, wounds, cellulitis, abscesses, blood, etc.
These do not need to be applied in a sterile fashion when it is just to protect the probe
does need to be applied in a sterile manner if for a sterile procedure, like central lines
