Kent Miyashiro taught music as a Hawaii Department of Education teacher from 1984 to 2019. His teaching career took him to Molokai High and Intermediate School, Kalakaua Middle School, Niu Valley Middle School, Jarrett Middle School and Ewa Makai Middle School.
His philosophy centered around the premise, "Teach students to share the joy and beauty of making music. Music should bring joy to the audience and the performer."
Initially trained as a Band Teacher, Mr. Miyashiro took up the ukulele "late in life" after attending a social gathering on Moloka'i. With no prior ukulele playing experience he was handed an ukulele and was told to "play, just follow...."
The love and respect for the ukulele was born! Mr. Miyashiro would always include the ukulele and Hawaiian music in every Band position he taught.
Ironically, he was hired as a Ukulele Teacher who also taught Band at his last teaching assignment.
Recently retired, Mr. Miyashiro has rekindled his passion for playing the ukulele, saxophone and fishing.
