Why UIS has a List of Endangered Caves and Karst?
The Working Group on Endangered Caves and Karst is a result of a follow-up project to the International Year of Caves and Karst 2021/2022. Nadja Zupan Hajna, President of the International Union of Speleology (UIS), proposed creating a list of endangered caves and karst features. A working group was created inside the UIS Bureau. The UIS supported the first cases highlighted here through supporting letters from its president during the term 2022 - 2025.
This website was displayed for the first time at the International Congress of Speleology 2025 in Brazil. With the support of the UIS General Assembly, the UIS calls for the reporting of endangered caves and karst to help better recognize and solve current problems, and to prevent future problems.
