I go by UIGuy as the letters “U” and “I” are meant to represent two words I often use to describe myself, which is “unique” and “inspired.” I love technology, and UI is also a technology-related term that means “user interface.”
I believe that publicly available AI is a good example of why we can’t have nice things.
I think that AI can generally be a good tool (keyword: tool). AI has the potential to truly make lives easier, and while we should take what it gives us with a grain of salt, it can be good to use in terms of summarization, inspiration, etc.
Softwares utilizing AI such as VOCALOID6:AI and Synthesizer V are great examples on how AI can be utilized into something, while still being ethical. YAMAHA and Dreamtonics both focus on consent when hiring voice providers for their software, and are against fully replacing talent and humans in the music industry with AI. (sources for these claims can be found below)
While it has its flaws, I also personally like Google Gemini because it gives you sources to its answers, and doesn’t just leave you with what it says. While yes, it’s still good to dig deeper into topics for better confidence and reliable sources, Gemini can be good for quick answers to things (assuming it sounds/looks trustworthy enough).
However, things like AI-generated art and AI-generated videos are terrible. It really sucks that I have to constantly question whether what I’m seeing on the internet or media in general is real or AI. Especially being an artist, seeing so much AI-generated media on both the internet and even on TV hurts. It really does. So many artists and content creators are struggling due to pro-AI corporations/corporates not seeing the harm it’s doing to the world.
I've also seen video and/or news titles stating that people are relying on AI to determine firing or arresting someone, only to find out that it was injustice. This practice is also disgusting.
I hate the argument of “why would I hire someone when I could just have AI do it for me.” That’s not the point. I understand that sometimes you have to go around things to get things done, but with an argument like that, you’re making others’ lives harder and only adding onto the problem. Some creators are in need of financial support, and have to live through an era where AI is practically taking over every aspect of creation. You need to at least be ethical and empathetic with your decisions, because life isn’t about being easy.
Long story short, AI is good as long as it’s used in a good, responsible, and ethical way.
