Each student is responsible for documentation of 300 hours of internship activity on a cumulative spreadsheet otherwise known as the Standards Log.
The School Nurse Intern Standards Log lists each of the (click to open) Illinois School Nurse Standards along with competency indicators for each standard.
Most students complete the 300 hour internship in one semester. However, some students in the internship may enroll for variable credit so, depending on your School Nurse Intern's schedule, they could be logging approximately 100 hours (1 credit) or 200 hours (2 credits) on the Standards Log this semester.
There are 12 School Nurse Standards with 93 associated competency indicators. The interns must document competency in at least 80% (75) indicators.
Here is the School Nurse Standards Clinical Log template that we use. Please ask your intern to show you their Standards Log! You will have great suggestions on how to fulfill the School Nurse Standard competencies!
Students also need to document at least 40 hours of "outside" hours during their internship, these are internship experiences outside of their usual setting.
Examples of common "outside" hour activities include:
Completing course assignments
Observation in contrasting school setting (ie, if you work in elementary school, observe in middle and/or high school, visit another district)
Attending professional meetings
Conferences with subject matter that can be tied to the School Nurse Standards
Meetings with preceptor
