The goal of the current project is to design a revised assessment tool, Automated Written Expression Curriculum-Based Measurement (aWE-CBM) for students in 3rd through 5th grade. Revisions will improve traditional, hand scored WE-CBM and better identify students with writing difficulties. Want to learn more about traditional CBM? Check out our Curriculum-Based Measurement page. This project is funded by the Institute of Education Sciences.
Through this project we are comparing aWE-CBM scores to traditional, hand scored WE-CBM scores. Our automated CBM scores are also being assessed against currently available automated scoring tools: Project Essay Grade (PEG), Coh-Metrix, GAMET, and ReaderBench. Students in our study will be given different types of WE-CBM prompts (i.e., narrative/story, informational, and argumentative/persuasive) to see how this affects the integrity of screening.
