The UHN POCUS team advises ongoing POCUS during COVID-19, if done safely.
- Scan when it will change management. i.e. undifferentiated acute presentations such as shock, concern for acute emergencies such as pneumothorax, pericardial effusion with possible tamponade, or pulmonary embolism.
- Scan to conserve time or resources, or otherwise substantially augment patient care.
- Scan methodically, saving images with patient info (new process instructions here), and follow these steps to keep the machine and yourself safe.
- Use the designated COVID-19 Mindray machine (which has extra materials removed from the cart) for all scans when possible. Ultrasound supplies are located at TWH beside the subacute MD desk (beside the PACS monitors) and at TGH in the new FT area (beside the PACS monitor) across from the Interview room. We suggest taking a few Caviwipes and patient wipes along with you before you scan.
- Use single-use gel packets - lubrication packs for rectal examinations are acceptable gel alternatives. Avoid touching any part of the machine besides handles and keypad.
- Pre-populate the patient's MRN, your name, probe selection and exam mode before you enter the room. Pre-adjust the gain and the depth (i.e. minimize button-touching in the room).
- If possible, keep a physical distance between the machine and the patient (yes, the cable length will be a limitation).
- Move the machine away from the patient. Sanitize gloved hands while in the patient’s room.
- Wipe down the entire surface of the machine with disinfectant wipes (Caviwipes) while inside the patient’s room, prior to doffing. Allow surfaces to dry (2 minutes).
- Move the machine out of the patient room. Doff your PPE and don new gloves.
- Wipe down the entire surface of the machine again. Allow surfaces to dry (2 minutes).
