INTRODUCTION
Assalamualaikum, hello, my name is Farah Adiba binti Zawawi. I’m 19 years old and from Sabak Bernam, Selangor. I am currently study at UITM Tapah, Perak. I’m one of the Diploma in Applied Science students. The code is AS120 and I’m in AS1201_6 group. I was thankful to be admitted in UITM in 2nd October. Hopefully I can achieve my goals here and aims for better things.
One of the most important purposes I’m doing this portfolio is to introduce about UED102 or well-known as study skills. UED102 provides students with learning skills essential for varsity life, which should be within each student. In my portfolio, I will present notes from every topic that I have learned in this subject. I hope this portfolio can help me to improve my study so I can reach my target in every exam that I take.
TOPIC 1: GET READY TO LEARN
The picture above shows differences of high school/ secondary school and college/ university life. After we had finished our secondary school and considering to enrolling in a diploma, we might wonder what are the differences between secondary school and university life? On our first day of university, we will be entering a whole new learning environment. To begin with, universities are generally different with the secondary school, which is much bigger with thousand of students, plus we also have more choices to make on our own, and more responsibilities on ourselves. If we’re going to move far away from our home for the first time to attend the university, we are going to be more independent with ourselves. Some may find it hard and some already suiting with the university life. It pretty much depends on our mentality. We need to be more open-minded and self-aware
Learning style inventory
Learning style inventory is a method to find a way for you to study well. This is important for you to memorizing lesson and keep focus in the class. There are many learning styles we can use to help us easily understand what we learn and keep in our memories.
Here are 3 examples of the learning styles:
Visual
Auditory
Kinaesthetic
Visual learner
In order to memorize or learn something, visual learners need to observe information or a task before they do so. This type of learners usually has strong visualization skills and can remember objects, shapes and pictures just by observing it within a small amount of time
Auditory learner
The learning style is a way of learning in which the information given is associated through listening. The main way of learning must be able to hear what is being said in order to understand and may have difficulty to understand if directions are drawn.
Kinaesthetic learner
This style takes place by the student carrying out physical activities rather than listening to a lecture or observing a demonstration video. They require manipulate or touch material to learn. This technique is used in combination with visual and/ or auditory study techniques, producing multi-sensory learning.
I have answered learning style inventory questions to find out my learning style. I am more into the type of visual learning style which I got 7 score in the table above and before this I was really easy to understand in visual. Then, the types of kinaesthetic and auditory learning styles are sometimes simple and easy for me to understand which I got 6 for both of types in the table above. Now I know my type of learning style and I can improve my study skills.
TOPIC 2: GOALS SETTING
What are goals?
A goal is a vision of an idea of the future or a desire result that everyone envisions, plans and commits to achieve. A goal is roughly like a purpose or an aim, the anticipated result which guides reaction, or an end, which is an object, whether if its physical nor an abstract object. Goals are important in university because they help to motivate you to do your assignment, to attend classes, and study for your exams.
Characteristic of Goals
What is it that you want, from a particular goal? What you want to achieve/ everything must be clearly specified. You must be specific about the details. It is better to write them down and stick it on the wall or door of refrigerator or any place where you can see it every time. If the goal has a picture, put it up. These specific details program your sub-conscious mind, and your focus shifts from the obstacles to the efforts that you can make to attain the goal.
Measurable
You need to identify the quantifiable aspect of the goal. This was you will be able to measure your progress and remain motivated. For certain kinds of goals, you may not be able to measure the results, especially for relationship goals or spiritual goals, but you can always record the activities that you are doing that will take you towards the goal.
Attainable
Setting goals that are unrealistic can have a negative effect rather that positive one. It is good to stretch yourself a bit, so that you can grow more towards your potential, but it must not be impossible to be real. Some people set goals, more to impress others. Many times, people set unattainable goals so that they can later blame their failure on the goal that was impossible to start with. So, set goals that may be difficult and challenging but not impossible.
Rewarding
The feeling that you get on achieving the goal is the reward that will keep you motivated in face of challenges and obstacles and prevent you from quitting. These rewards could be of different types based on the type of goals discussed in last page. It could be positions in your career, material rewards based on your financial wellbeing, physical, spiritual, or relationships oriented.
Time-Bound
The final ingredient of SMART goal is that it must be time-bound. It must not be too short, as it will make the goal unattainable, and not be too much. Time is one of the prices that you are paying for the goal, and you must give it time that the goal is worth. Setting deadline will also insure you against procrastination and perfectionism. The bigger goals in the life must be set first and an action plan prepared to achieve them. These bigger goals are usually the long terms goals or life goals. The action plan of these long-term big goals will contain smaller medium-term goals with their own individual action plans, which in turn will contain even smaller goals till they boil down to monthly and daily goals.
I have answered the SMART goal map and I has clear what my goal is and I am sure that my goal will be accomplish if I work hard on it and always remember my what my goal is.

TOPIC 4: TIME MANAGEMENT
Time management is the process of organizing and planning how to divide your time between specific activities. Good time management enables you to work smarter, not harder. So that you get more done in less time, even when time is tight, and pressure are high. Failing to manage your time dangers your effectiveness and causes stress.

Set a deadline
Get rid of distractions
Get the hard stuff done first
I have answered the fixed-commitment calendar and found that my schedule is not neatly arrange, which is I need 14 hours of time to study for one week while my current hours available for study is only 4 hours. I need to rearrange my schedule timetable as soon as possible to get on the straight track again. so that my study life is more neatly arrange.
I have listed my task which is have its own importance scale and frequency scale and that's all are my priority to done it in a date given. Based on the table above, I have finished some of my priority task and for the rest, I can't make it finish today but I will try to finish it at a time.
TOPIC 5: MEMORY, LEARNING AND IMPROVING CONCENTRATION
Memory Learning
What is memory? Memory refers to the process that are used to acquire, store, retain and later retrieve information. There are three major processes involved in memory. There are encoding, storage and retrieval. Human memory involves the ability to both preserve and recover information we have learned or experienced.
How to Improve Our Memory?
Massed practice vs spaced practice
Break reading material down for some period of time
Rehearsal
Elaboration strategies
As the activities shows above, I found that I need to improve my memory strategies because my total score is 3 which is very low. Other than that, I have tried the activity 4-7 which is I try some organization strategies. At first, when I'm not organizing the word given, I only can memorize 6 out of 12. After that, I try grouping the word as the activity told me to and I can memorize 10 words out of twelve which is my memory strategy is improving. So the next time i try to memorize things, i will use this method.
What is Concentration?
Concentration is the ability to direct one's attention in accordance with one's will.
It means control of the attention.
It is the ability to focus the mind on one subject, object or thought without being distracted.
This is the ability to focus the attention, and at the same time, ignore other unrelated thoughts.
It also means the ability to do one thing at a time, instead of jumping from one subject to another, and losing attention, time and energy.
Concentration is a state, in which one's whole attention is engrossed in one thing only and being obviously to everything else.
the word concentration means focusing one's thoughts and attention on one thing or thought.
Talk about concentration, here I have answered the questions about concentrations. I found that I'm not having a bad concentration problems but I might have the problem sometimes when I'm studying on in a classes I attend.
As for the table shown above. I barely can concentrate which is I always has a concentration problem. As an example, I can't concentrate study because I'm hungry, I get boring easily and I want to play phone rather than study. Every problem has a solution. So I decided to solve my concentration problem by fulfilling my desire which is if I get boring or tired during study, I will take 5 minutes and rest and will continue study after 5 minutes rest. This helps me concentrate with study.
I have tried read this text and after 3 minutes I read, i have concentration problem which is I get tired and boring. I solve it by take 5 minutes and rest and continue reading after 5 minutes rest. After that, I can continue reading without concentration problem.
