I've loved music for as long as I can remember. Singing in the church choir. Learning multiple instruments while growing up. Basement and garage bands. I got a hold of a Sony TC-200 reel-to-reel in high school and so started my love with multitracking. I used one of the TC-200 speakers as a mic and tracked guitar on the left and bass on the right. I would bounce the stereo signal down to a cassette then feed the cassette back into the reel-to-reel on one side while adding a lead, or a vocal, or something to the other side. Bounce again. Add something else....over and over and over again until the audio degradation was even more than I could stand.
Post high school, my 3-piece band recorded in an 8-track studio in Red Bank, NJ where I learned the process of building a song in a modern 1980-something studio. We experimented with reverse reverb, 1 second samplers, bass drum triggers, and micing a speaker in another room to capture the room reverb on the snare. With only 8-tracks available, the idea of good performances and commitment to a sound weren't optional. Drums were bounced down to a stereo L/R early in the tracking session. Backup vocals were done by 2-3 people around 1 mic. Guitar parts were bounced down with keyboards. Bass bounced down with percussion. A sampled guitar chord was triggered from the control room onto the same track as the guitar solo being recorded. Not good? Do it again because once bounced, those performances were "locked in"...at least on our budget. Editing meant re-recording multiple parts, which was out of our budget. Good performances. Commitment to a decision. Move on.
The gear has changed over the years but the fundamentals remain largely the same:
I still play. I still record. I now also enjoy applying some of the recording and mixing techniques learned over the years to both my projects and yours. Contact me to discuss your needs and let's see if I can't help you make music Under my Dining Room.
