I studied Physics, Mathematics, and Spanish at the Universities of Freiburg (Germany), Brock (ONT, Canada), and Heidelberg (Germany). During my Diploma Thesis I worked with Roche Diagnostics on a tissue spectrometer. I obtained my PhD in 2004 from Heidelberg University for the co-development of a structured illumination microscope. In 2017 I obtained my Habilitation (venia legendi) in Experimental Physics from Mainz University.
