Research

The Institute of Photonics and Robotics (IPR) at FH Graubünden in Chur (Switzerland) focusses on applied research and education of photonic technologies. Every day we are in contact with photonics applications, from smart phones to traffic, from delivery services to optimized shopping experiences, often without us registering the technologies behind. At IPI, we aim at understanding, applying, and further developing light-based technologies.

Currently I am Head of the Institute for Photonics and Robotics (IPR) as well as Head of Advanced Training Technics, Professor and Researcher at the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons (Switzerland). Previously, I worked as deputy group leader of the super-resolution light microscopy lab (with Prof. Christoph Cremer), where I focussed on the development of novel super- and high resolution microscopes and their application to biology and medicine. Additionally, I was a guest researcher and outside lecturer (in Physics and Biophysics) at the Universities of Mainz and Heidelberg. Before that time, I have also been a consultant for German small and medium-sized enterprises and research organizations participating in European research collaborations within the EUROSTARS funding programme.

My research is focused on the set-up, improvement and application of novel imaging techniques, and comprises hardware as well as software implementation.

Example applications are:

Novel 3D imaging technologies e.g., Time-of-Flight (ToF), patterned illumination, 3D laser scanner for object recognition.

Advanced Imaging Technologies for smart sensors, sensor fusion and artificial intelligence, e.g. for traffic surveillance and for smart displays.

Nano-scale Imaging e.g., chromatin remodelling and the functional architecture of the cell nucleus, sub-cellular transport.

Meso-scale imaging using 3D optical tomography and photoacoustics e.g., imaging of live model organisms (e.g. C. elegans, Parhyale hawaiensis), detection of blood vessels during laser surgery.
