How do we celebrate the New Year?
1) UDATE Time Capsule
As the new year approaches, attendees write their hopes, predictions, and goals for the upcoming year on slips of paper. These are then placed into a specially designed UDATE time capsule, which is sealed at the stroke of the new year. The capsule is set to be opened at the next UDATE New Year celebration, allowing participants to reflect on the past year's achievements and the accuracy of their predictions. This activity reinforces the UDATE system's emphasis on precise timekeeping and the "time past" concept.
2) The Decimal Dawn Ceremony
The ceremony begins at dawn on the UDATE new year's day (around 5am in sexagesimal time). Participants gather outdoors, preferably in a natural setting, to witness the sunrise—symbolizing the start of the new year and the system's emphasis on precise timekeeping.
3) Zero Point Reflection
At the moment the new year begins (Year 0, Month 0, Day 0 in UDATE), participants observe one minichron (decimal minute) of silence, contemplating the concept of "time past" and new beginnings.
4) Dawn Decimal Cracker Feast
For an early morning UDATE New Year celebration. Every participant will eat 10 crackers symbolizing decimal system. Here are ten different toppings for crackers that are suitable for a 5 AM gathering:
- Smoked Salmon with Lemon Cream Cheese: A light and refreshing start to the day, combining the richness of salmon with a zesty lemon note.
- Avocado Spread with Cherry Tomatoes: Creamy avocado pairs well with the sweetness of cherry tomatoes, providing a nutritious and filling start.
- Crispy Bacon Bits with Cheddar Cheese: For those who enjoy a savory breakfast, crispy bacon and melted cheddar cheese make a satisfying combination.
- Fresh Mint and Feta: A refreshing and light option, perfect for early morning, with the coolness of mint complementing the tanginess of feta.
- Honey and Almond Butter: A sweet and satisfying topping, ideal for those with a sweet tooth in the morning.
- Spinach and Sun-Dried Tomato Tapenade: A flavorful and healthy option, combining the earthiness of spinach with the savory taste of sun-dried tomatoes.
- Hard-Boiled Egg Slices with Chives: A protein-packed option, adding a bit of freshness with chives.
- Caramelized Onion and Goat Cheese: Sweet caramelized onions paired with creamy goat cheese offer a rich and indulgent start.
- Roasted Garlic and Hummus: For a savory and aromatic option, roasted garlic hummus provides a delightful flavor profile.
- Fresh Berries with Yogurt Cream: A light and fruity ending to the feast, combining the sweetness of berries with a dollop of yogurt cream.
These toppings offer a variety of flavors and textures, ensuring there's something for everyone at the early morning celebration.

6) Planting of the Year Tree
A sapling is planted to represent the new year. Each participant adds a small amount of soil, symbolizing their contribution to the growth of the new timekeeping system.
