Culturally and historically, zines have served as a powerful outlet for content considered to be too niche, risqué, or outside of the mainstream, in terms of more traditional or commercial forms of publication. A zine can be produced with the simplest of tools, and easily distributed low-to-the-ground, outside capitalistic or potentially oppressive systems: amongst friends, in local gathering places or homes, at fests designed to celebrate them! Zines provide a safe, independent platform of expression for underrepresented and marginalized voices: Black, Indigenous & People of Color, young people, people with disabilities, the LGBTQ+ community, persecuted religious gropus, and people with limited economic resources. Zines aren’t for profit; zines are vehicles to make art, engage with your community or subculture, and elevate voices that otherwise don’t get heard. They allow people to connect, ask questions, stay up to date on events, or spread awareness of issues, such as the climate crisis!
Ecommunity was formed as a student project to offer UCSD student climate activists an opportunity to share their work about climate and cultivate a deeper connection among our climate community here at UC San Diego. This zine pulls together student POC and LGBTQ+ voices to increase accesibility to climate-related discourse and highlight the strength in our ability to act against climate change!
Each year, the Ecommunity team applies for grants, such as TRELs or The Green Initiative Fund, in order to cover our production costs.
Our virtual zines are free for anyone to read, download, print, and interact with. Currently, physical copies of Issue I zines are not for sale and are available to read at (insert spots on campus). Physical copies of Issue II can be ordered HERE! For physical copies of Issue II zines, we do kindly request a $10 minimum donation. All the proceeds from Issue II will be donated to the Basic Needs Hub at UCSD.
We would love to have you! There are no applications necessary to join our team! We accept anyone, at any capacity to help put together our zines! If you are interested in joining or helping out, shoot us a message on Instagram @ucsdecommunity <3
