We have been friends since high school and are furthering our education in Environmental Studies at UCSB. Both of us know the feeling of financial burden- especially as students- so issues of financial equity are very important to us. Coming to UCSB also allowed us to broaden our knowledge of environmental justice issues, much of which comes from financial disadvantage. This led us to ELI, which allowed us the opportunity to make lasting change.

My name is Bella Rosemarie Crosland Bell, and I’m a third-year Environmental Studies major with a deep passion for economics and geography. I serve as the Executive Co-Chair for the Associated Students Environmental Justice Alliances at UCSB, where I oversee the implementation of educational initiatives, community building, and advocacy around the issue of Environmental Justice—ensuring that underrepresented voices are heard.
This past summer, I had the incredible opportunity to study abroad in Belize, where I conducted both social and quantitative research on how conservation techniques are implemented in a country rich in biodiversity but low in support. As one of my first trips abroad, it was a transformative experience that expanded my international perspective on life and conservation.
Currently, I’m partnering with my longtime friend Emma Trakh on a year-long project through the Environmental Leadership Incubator to implement a free sustainable refill station on campus. I’m excited to see where this journey takes us and the impact we can make!

My name is Emma Trakh and I'm a newly decided Environmental Studies Major at UCSB, studying to become a sustainable urban planner. I've taken many courses at UCSB catered to informing students about the current climate crisis, most of which have led to this decision. After learning about climate displacement, lack of resources for marginalized communities, and the negative social aspects that are exacerbated by a worsening climate crisis, I decided to get involved with instilling sustainable habits in my peers to create a better future for all of us. I'm ecstatic to be sharing Bella and I's environmental initiative with you!
