The Association for Women in Math Student Chapter at UCSB is a club dedicated to empowering and unifying a community of mathematicians, both undergraduate and graduate. The goal of this organization is to create an element of support for young women and non-binary individuals who feel that they are one of few in this field of study, and focuses on presenting a variety of speakers, events and opportunities to reach all strands of the mathematical community. All genders are welcome at every meeting.

The AWM student chapter at UCSB was founded by Chloe Avery, Phoebe Coy and Tamara Gomez. A few years prior, Professor Maribel Bueno founded an AWSum group at UCSB inspired by some of her female students who complained that they felt intimidated in upper division math classes that were full of men. The initial goal was to create a group that would allow the female students in the math department to get to know each other and form study groups and support groups. It worked very well for a couple of years until the original founders graduated. After that, the three founders above attended a conference in which they heard about AWM student chapter and proposed restarting the group and forming an AWM student chapter.
