Dr. Richard Herman has been involved in the theatre teaching profession since 1976. His high school teaching career included serving as theatre instructor at Jefferson city high school and Kinsley high school. As a graduate assistant he taught at university of central Missouri and Texas tech university. Shortly after becoming a university professor, Herman taught at Marymount college of Kansas, Milliken university, and joined the theatre faculty at central Missouri in 1987. As a director and actor, Herman has been involved in over 150 productions throughout his career.

The Richard Herman black box production program provides innumerable teaching and learning opportunities. Incoming students have the chance to get a foot in the door working on black box productions. Above all the program provides opportunities for peer mentoring, and the chance to get involved in the department of theatre and dance at UCM. Learning the rules, regulations, and traditions of UCM theatre as they prepare themselves for main stage production work. The flexible seating space, Lighting grid, and sound capabilities make the black box a perfect lab venue for beginning designers. Students of all levels get the chance to write original works, assemble production teams, create a full production schedule, and produce a theatrical experience on their own. Providing a comprehensive understanding of all areas of production.
It is the Coordinator’s job to oversee all aspects of scheduling in the black box. Including: rehearsals, performances, production meetings, and technical preparation. Their single most important responsibility is the development of a highly motivated and collaborative production team, which includes all those in charge of the various areas of the production: technical director, publicist, director, stage manager, designer(s), as the production might require. Responsibilities coordinate with directors, faculty, and black box staff to create a master schedule for the Nickerson Black Box. Acquire rehearsal schedules from directors. The technical director is responsible for overseeing smooth transitions from show to show. Collaborating with the Black Box coordinator, Directors, designers, and members of the technical faculty. In production, the Technical director oversees the coordinating of a crew of stage hands for each show, and leading them in preparing the technical aspects. A working knowledge of the technical areas of theatre is required. Responsibilities include coordinating with directors, designers and black box staff. Organize crews for each production. Oversee the coming together of ALL technical aspects
The publicity coordinator oversees the advertisement of the program’s season. Collaborating with the black box coordinator, and the directors; the publicity coordinator is responsible for designing and constructing production programs, posters, and assembling a front of house crew. Responsibilities include Collaborating with Directors. Creating show posters. Promoting the season. And maintain social media presence.
