PACIFIC ISLANDERS FOR HEALTH

pacific islanders for health (p4h)

Pacific Islander’s for H.E.A.L.T.H. is a student organization at the UCLA that aims to address the current health disparities faced by the Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities in the greater Los Angeles area. These health disparities arise from an array of social determinants, which Pacific Islanders for H.E.A.L.T.H. will address through a holistic approach. Each year, P4H hosts two events that are open to the public: the Hawaiian Gardens Health Fair and NHPI Youth Health and Fitness Day.

To promote a healthier Pacific Islander community we will focus on the following objectives:

H – Health: Members will help promote a healthier lifestyle in the Pacific Islander community by engaging in health, nutrition, and fitness workshops organized by student health related organizations on campus.

E – Education: Increase the number of Pacific Islander health professionals by facilitating access to higher education and cultivating an interest in healthcare professions.

A – Access: Increase access to health resources by hosting an annual Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Youth Health and Fitness Day in collaboration with the Pacific Islands’ Student Association at UCLA.

L – Language: Advocate for culturally competent health care information that meet the linguistic needs of Pacific Islanders to ensure proper health services, screenings, and treatments.

T – Training: Provide health professional development for members through mentorship, clinical experience, and other appropriate trainings.

H – Heart: Promote heart disease awareness through education and action to help decrease the rate of heart disease mortality amongst the Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander community.

HAWAIIAN GARDENS HEALTH FAIR

When: Winter Quarter (February)

Every year, P4H hosts a free Health Fair with the Asian Pacific Health Corps to address the lack of access to medical resources and knowledge in the Pacific Islander community. We aim to aid and mentor Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders about their health. The fair also includes a variety of health screenings including blood glucose, BMI, osteopathic manipulative medicine, vision, and more!

NHPI YOUTH HEALTH & FITNESS DAY

When: Spring Quarter (May)

For 9 years, NHPI Youth Health & Fitness Day has served to educate young Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders about living healthy lifestyles. The day features many free services including health screenings, fitness workshops, health informational booths, and much more. Transportation is typically provided at two sites in Los Angeles. We welcome all friends, families, and community members.
