Worksite Wellness

Hannah

"During spring semester, I had the opportunity to be the Worksite Wellness intern. During the month of February, I was able to cut out paper hearts and write heart healthy facts on them. I hung these hearts in the break rooms. It was fun to celebrate National Heart Month and Valentine’s Day by doing that project. During the month of March, I was able to create a budget for healthy snacks to put in employee break rooms for National Nutrition Month. I was able to go out and purchase the items and design small posters that described the health benefits of the particular food. Those were also hung in the employee break rooms. During the month of April, I was able to work on my own community health program that could be potentially implemented in the workplace. It was fun to have the opportunity to design my very own program and receive feedback from the Worksite Wellness Coordinator. This program is something that I’ll be able to share with future employers and add to my portfolio. I also created monthly newsletters using Microsoft Publisher. Now, I am confident in my ability to use the software and it is a great skill to add to my resume. I have learned so much during my internship and feel much more confident about graduating and finding a job in the community health field."

"This internship has helped me gain experience in a specific field that I am extremely interested in. I love worksite wellness and now have a better understanding of how to run a program on my own. I now understand the business side of the process as well as the health side of it. There are many technological skills that I developed as I learned various ways to promote health programs to employees. I have also improved my abilities to plan and evaluate programs. I was also able to work on other projects besides worksite wellness which gave me diverse public health experience."

"As a worksite wellness intern, I worked under Kari Schmidt to create health campaigns for employees to participate in. I was also responsible for monthly newsletters, weekly email tips, and teaching yoga for the month of October. At the Health Department, I had my first experience with office culture and county work. I thought this was an educational internship opportunity for those interested in Health Promotion, as I was able to work on a variety of projects and also with other interns. The office employees were exceedingly kind and helpful, and provided a pleasant internship experience."

"I did my internship at the Utah County Health Department, with Kari in the Work-site Wellness Area. I didn't realize when I started out what a variety of opportunities and projects I was going to be able to help with. One of my favorite projects this semester, has been working to create, the design and the planning of a new year-long health campaign for the employees of Utah County for next year. I felt like this was an application of my upper level classes. I also was able to write on the blog, update the Facebook page, do a newsletter and make fliers.

During my internship I also was able to create a Stairwell Challenge. I was able to create this small health challenge, implement it and evaluate it. I also was able to create several surveys that were sent out to the Utah County Employees.

Another thing I really enjoyed about my internship was that in the Health Promotion sector, it is all about teamwork. As I worked here, I could really see how the coworkers relied on each for helpful ideas, editing papers, and answering phones. Even though I was working with Work-site Wellness I was able to help out injury and tobacco prevention as well!"

"Interning at the Utah County Health Department during the Fall 2012 semester was a great experience. I worked with Kari Schmidt doing various things for the worksite wellness program. I created healthy challenges, contributed ideas for the new worksite wellness program Well 4 Life, promoted events, conducted focus groups, assisted in the planning of the HEAU Fall and Spring Conferences, and taught at a brown bag event. I had a wonderful experience!"
