at The University of California Washington Center

located in Washington, DC

“Change the World through Research”:

An Institute where UC Faculty will learn to be better public speakers

 Proposals due: April 10, 2023

The University of California Washington Center invites proposals from University of California faculty members for the “Change the World through Research” Speaker Institute.

This Institute will focus on how to develop and deliver a TED-style talk. The goal of this institute is to enhance UC faculty members’ skills as public intellectuals and to expand the reach and public impact of UC faculty members’ research.

Our focus is on researchers whose work has the potential to influence public policy. We will give priority to proposals that contribute to advancing social justice and to early-career researchers. Topics are open and can include but are not limited to addressing climate change, ending police and gun violence, creating more humane immigration policies, enhancing reproductive justice, promoting civil and human rights, creating a more equitable economy, creating affordable and culturally-sensitive health care, improving affordable housing, and ending unfair labor practices.

Please submit a 250-word abstract that describes your proposed talk and the policy implications of your research.

This is a one-time funding opportunity, supported by the UC Grow Your Own Initiative

Eligibility: All University of California Senate faculty and Continuing Lecturers

The selection criteria will be based on

1)    The merits of the research: Is the proposal based on strong empirical evidence?

2)    The clarity of the argument: Does the proposal identify a clear argument?

3)    Innovation: Does the proposal present new and innovative ideas?

4)    The policy implications of the research: Are there clear policy implications?

5)    The contributions to diversity and social justice: Does the research advance UC’s goals of contributing to diversity and advancing social justice?

Applicants must commit to participating in a virtual workshop series, presenting at a public event at the Washington Center on June 20, and delivering a TEDx talk within one year of the program.
