Art History Professor at the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London
From a working-class background, Anthony studied Art History in Cambridge on receipt of a scholarship. He is an expert in the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist periods. During the second World War he served with the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives Section (MFAA), commonly known as the Monuments Men. In 1948, he and his friend Robert Delacroix discovered the lost work by Vincent van Gogh - The Painter on the Road to Tarascon. Since then, Anthony has been the toast of the art collection world, in both academic and private circles. He has also seen his personal fortune flourish. As he retires, Anthony is preparing to publish his memoir of his time with the Monuments Men.
Detective Inspector at Scotland Yard
A former student of Professor Posey, Jonathan enlisted as a soldier during World War II and, upon returning home, joined Scotland Yard. Fiercely intelligent and pragmatic, he has risen swiftly through the ranks.
With The Painter on the Road to Tarascon set to appear at the retirement party, Jonathan volunteers to attend and provide security, due to both the painting’s significance and his personal connection to Professor Posey.
Wife of Professor Posey
Francine is Anthony's devoted wife. However, their marriage was not favoured by her family due to Anthony's underwhelming career prospects as a young graduate. Despite this rocky start, she has provided unwavering support for her husband in his career, However, tonight as she attends his retirement party, her suspicions of certain marital indiscretions have increased.
Director of the Courtauld Institute, University of London
Professor Henry Gowing is a very well-respected academic, though seen by many of his faculty members as a lover of bureaucracy. While Henry has historically had a good relationship with Anthony, he has recently begun to have suspicions regarding both Anthony’s academic conduct and his relationship with his own wife Marjorie.
Wife of Professor Henry Gowing
Marjorie is known to be the tastemaker amongst the academic wives and plays a pivotal role in organising the social events of the Courtauld Institute on behalf of her husband, Professor Henry Gowing. She is incredibly knowledgeable about art and art history in her own right. Over the past year, rumours have spread regarding the nature of her personal relationship with Professor Posey.
Postdoctoral Researcher at the Courtauld Institute, University of London
Martha previously worked in the National Gallery in art conservation and restoration. She has since completed a Ph.D. under the supervision of Professor Posey. She is now working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute. Martha's research has focused on the reclamation of art works by the Monuments Men and the impact on both private and public collections in the post-war period. However, much of her work has been published solely under Professor Posey’s name. She has recently been assisting Professor Posey in the preparation for his memoirs.
Newly appointed Director of the National Gallery, London
For Samuel, securing The Painter on the Road to Tarascon by van Gogh during his time as Director of Collections and Research changed the course of his career. Many credit it as the primary reason for his current position as the newly appointed Director of the Gallery. However, as he attends the retirement of his school friend, Samuel has suspicions that all is not what it seems regarding the painting.
Daughter of Mr Robert Delacroix
Vivienne has travelled from France to attend the retirement party. She arrives with suspicions that Professor Posey may not have been entirely honest with her father, Robert, regarding the transfer of The Painter on the Road to Tarascon to the National Gallery. In fact, Vivienne has deep suspicions that the professor operated behind Robert’s back in the acquisition and sale of art pieces on the black market. Vivenne fears that if there is any truth to her suspicions, it will tarnish her father's legacy and damage the reputation of their family gallery.
A representative from John Murray Publishers
Ms Cray is attending the retirement party to help promote Professor Posey's memoir, which is due to be finalised and published in the coming months. The publishers have advanced the professor a considerable sum of money, so Ruth is very eager to encourage interest in the book at the party.

Elvira Melford has worked for Professor Posey for the last eight years and is an extremely diligent employee. Reserved and a quiet presence, she has a close working relationship with Dr Martha Seagrove. A significant family fortune and a wealthy husband has meant that Rose rivals any gallery when it comes to art acquisitions. She has significant connections with both the public and private art circles. Professor Posey has acquired some significant pieces for Rose, some publicly announced and others never publicly acknowledged.
Journalist with The London Herald
Audrey is the epitome of a dedicated journalist; her core belief is that no one gets far without a secret. She has previously reported on the Blitz in London and D-Day. As she attends the retirement party tonight, she feels that international affairs such as De Gaulle's election as President of France would be more worthy of her time. However, having previously featured Professor Posey as part of her award winning series Profiles from the War, she cannot shake the suspicion that there is more to his story than meets the eye.
