@jibel I noticed that for FocalFossa (20.04) the WSL rootfs is published at -images.ubuntu.com/daily/server/focal/current/ in this line:

[ ] focal-server-cloudimg-amd64-wsl.rootfs.tar.gz 2023-09-15 22:21 531M File system image and Kernel packed

my experience doing this on one drive is that Windows tends to just take over the boot manager when you alter your device encryption configuration (as in, decrypt device then install ubuntu on dual boot then re-encrypt which requires you to set BIOS to load the windows boot manager first) - windows just goes ahead and removes your boot manager when you do that

I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding your question, but your ubuntu bash (top right window) should have access to your Windows-based disks under /mnt. For example, on my machine /mnt/c/Users/Scott/Desktop is my Windows desktop and I can read/write files there from vi for ex. I don't believe the opposite is true just yet. That is, I don't think you can explore into your bash world from Windows explorer.

For example If you are working on a project in d:/projects/web-project, you can create a symlink at location /var/www/web-project and all the files you change in windows will be readily available to be accessed in Linux Bash.

Hi.

My windows desktop died so I am assembling a new one.

Using Ubuntu, I can still access the dead computers drives, I would like to copy my old Brave user profile-setup to the new Ubuntu and windows machines.

Can I just copy a profile from one install to another and where is-are the profile(s) stored?

Regaeds.

However, the ALT+Tab still flips between the Citrix remote Windows session and the windows on my local Debian desktop. Similarly WIN+D doesn't send the command to show desktop on the remote Windows machine.

In my case I had to manually install the Ubuntu 16.04 distro because the windows store was not working on my pc which appears to be a common issue. I originally tried using Ubuntu 18 but it failed. Just for clarity, I determined which Ubuntu version to use by downloading the entire starter package, running the virtual machine in VMWare player and at the bash prompt I used the command:

I discovered that the VM image was using Ubuntu 16.04. I have a hunch that the URControl binary file was compiled using the gcc version common for the 16.04 release. Therefore, to make things compatible you will also want to use 16.04. However, in the future when the URSim is updated, you may have be required to upgrade to a newer version. You can always check which version to use by running the command above. Hopefully by that time someone at universal robots will read my crazy instructions and officially support running ursim on windows.

To manually install, I downloaded the appx file for 16.04, rename the file extension to zip. Extract it to a temp folder using 7-Zip or another tool of your choice. Then open and administrative command prompt and run ubuntu.exe. It will take a few minutes to install.

For me personally, I have a much better user experience running everything on windows 10 and I use less overhead on my workstation by running things without the overhead of the complete Linux operating system. I feel more productive this way and I hope this post will help others!

Due to some permission issues I found the best way to get this to work was to setup ssh on WSL and alter the setup to run on port 2200 instead of 22. This means you can ssh into the WSL via 2200 and the localhost ip (127.0.0.1)

Used commands here

 -diaries/ssh-on-windows-subsystem-for-linux/

So if you want to make new app windows open in the center of the screen in Ubuntu you can. You just need to make use of a system setting not exposed in the standard GUI (though you can access a GUI toggle for it if you install the GNOME Tweaks tool).

Thanks @bellenot

I did install Xming on windows. But it seems I am not able to link it somehow. I simply downloaded Xming and installed the app and it changed nothing. Do I need to run some command on ubuntu terminal after that?

Hi, I was trying to install Ubuntu Linux on Windows but it gives me an error that the program requires me to enable the Windows Subsystem for Linux.I am not able to do this. I tried to follow instructions from -us/windows/wsl/install-win10?redirectedfrom=MSDN, but it gives me an error. I do not think my admin allows me to do this.I submitted a ticket to NIH Help desk to see if they can help me with this, but I was wondering if anyone else found this issue.

Our setup is using Wyse 5070 Thinclients to RDP into vms, each vm is specific to one user. The biggest problem with this issue is that its intermittent and cant be recreated, it just happens randomly so its hard to troubleshoot. And apparently after today, we found out its not creating any event logs even though when the issue occurs, if you try to open the sound settings on windows, the settings app freezes and then you get kicked out of your vm. I have posted the same problem on Dell forums and VMware forums and awaiting more solutions, BUT, in the dell forum, a user told me to update the thinclients BIOS, thinOS, microsoft AVD, and zoom AVD package. (which is what I assume is the plugin). After doing so, the issue occured for my coworker when I called him, he also had the updated thin client but he also had an update zoom app (I did not). upon looking into my settings I found that my plugin is disconnected because I update the plugin before the app. So I went ahead and updated the zoom vdi and the normal client apps.

Now one peculiar thing stood out for me is that when I go into the statistics tab in the settings (initially did this to find out if a spike in hardware usage was causing this, sadly not) I noticed under VDI that the Thin Client OS Version is listed as Linux, even though we are all using Windows 10. Now I dont know if this is relevant or if its causing the issue but its one thing I would like to remedy since I am on a trial and error knocking one possible solution off at a time till I get the correct result.
