Located by the Health Sciences Building (also known as Warner hall).
The Garden was started by the College of Naturopathic Medicine to give students the chance to experience identifying and working with live and fresh Botanical Medicine specimens.
The former Garden club led by Professor Emeritus Dr. Eugene Zampieron used these plants in herbal preparations (Zoom and Zen balls) as well as managing them.
The garden has also been used for Botanical Medicine classes in through the Acupuncture Institute. (Some of these classes are now open as electives to Science and Society students) and has been used in PAI and Biology classes as well.
These plants allow students to recognize visible differences between the largest medical plant families: Asteraceae, Fabaceae, and Lamiaceae. The students use these plants to sketch and take specimens for the University of Bridgeport Medical Herbarium collection.
Use the links below to identify and learn more about the plants in each area.
We are still entering our specimens into the online Herbarium catalog, but feel free to click on the picture above to explore the Herbarium
or even set up your own account and record what you see!
We are currently in the process of updating our plants, but the excel sheet below represents the most current catalog of the species located in each plot.
Our plot against the building HSC and the plantings in front of END hall appear to be benefitting from a local microclimate from the Sound and the buildings proximity allowing some plants from lower Zones to grow more readily.
We also manage some flora by END (Elanor Dana) hall including an uniquely Northern tree specimen of Sabal palm
