As drones become a more prevalent feature in our lives, both commercially and consumer-wise, concerns of their safety have become more pressing, especially as these drones move toward autonomy. Crucial to the safety of both the drone and bystanders are collision detection systems. Numerous drones currently on the market employ a variety of technologies to achieve this: stereo vision, sonar, Time-of-Flight sensors, LiDAR, infrared, and monocular vision. But these drones have limitations. Many of these drones do not possess a full 6 directions of collision detection, and those that do are incredibly expensive. The goal of my project will be to construct a forward-facing collision detection system utilizing an IR sensor for a consumer drone, minimizing the size of the system so that the drone may maintain a meaningful payload.
