Dubai, known for its futuristic skyline, luxury shopping, and vibrant culture, also boasts one of the most advanced and convenient public transportation systems in the world — the Dubai Metro. Opened in 2009, the Metro has become the backbone of public transport in the city and a favorite among tourists and residents alike. Clean, efficient, and fully automated, it’s one of the easiest ways to explore the city.
Whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, this guide will help you navigate the Dubai Metro like a pro.
The Dubai Metro is a rapid transit rail network operated by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). It currently consists of two main lines:
Red Line: Runs along Sheikh Zayed Road, connecting major business and tourist districts from Rashidiya to Expo 2020 (recently renamed Expo City Dubai).
Green Line: Runs through older parts of Dubai, such as Deira and Bur Dubai, and connects Etisalat station to Creek.
An expansion is underway, with more lines and stations planned as the city continues to grow.
Affordability: Metro fares are significantly cheaper than taxis or private transport, making it ideal for budget-conscious travelers.
Speed & Reliability: Trains run frequently, typically every 5–7 minutes during peak hours.
Connectivity: Many of Dubai’s top attractions are located near Metro stations.
Comfort & Safety: Air-conditioned, driverless trains with clean stations and security present at all times.
Sustainability: Using the Metro helps reduce carbon emissions and traffic congestion.
Before boarding, you’ll need a Nol card, a smart card used across all public transport in Dubai.
Types of Nol Cards:
Red Ticket (ideal for tourists): Can be loaded with up to 10 single trips.
Silver Card: General use, valid for 5 years.
Gold Card: Allows access to Gold Class cabins.
Blue Card: For residents and students (requires registration).
Nol cards are available at all Metro stations, vending machines, and RTA customer service centers.
Dubai is divided into seven fare zones, and the fare depends on how many zones you cross.
Short trip (within 1 zone): ~3 AED with a Red Ticket
2 zones: ~5 AED
More than 2 zones: ~7.50 AED
(Prices are approximate and subject to change)
You must tap your Nol card at the gate when entering and exiting the station.
Dubai Metro trains have different sections:
Gold Class: Premium seating with more space (higher fare).
Women & Children Cabin: Reserved space for women and children only.
Standard Class: General public.
Make sure you're in the right section, as fines apply for violations.
