TypeSense — Privacy Policy

TypeSense ("we", "the app") is an AI writing keyboard. This policy explains what we process and why. In short: we do not log your keystrokes, we don't show ads, we don't sell your data, and there are no accounts.

Your permission comes first

TypeSense uses a third-party AI service, OpenAI, L.L.C. ("OpenAI"), to generate the results of its cloud features. Before any of your text is sent to our server or to OpenAI, the app shows you a consent screen that names OpenAI, lists exactly what will be sent and what will not, and asks you to agree. Nothing is transmitted unless you tap "Agree and enable cloud AI".

• If you decline, cloud actions are blocked before any network request is made. The keyboard, on-device grammar "Fix", spellcheck and word suggestions keep working normally.

• Before you agree, none of your text leaves the device — not a word of it, and not the anonymous app-integrity check that exists only to protect the endpoint cloud requests go to. The app does send the anonymous usage and advertising measurement described below from the moment it launches; that is separate from your text, and you can switch it off in Settings → Privacy Center.

• You can withdraw your permission at any time in Settings → Privacy Center → Cloud AI permission. Withdrawal takes effect immediately, in both the app and the keyboard.

• If we ever change what the app transmits, we will ask again rather than rely on your earlier answer.

What we process

None of your text leaves your device until you tap an AI action. Your text is never transmitted in the background, and we never capture your keystrokes. (The measurement described under Advertising and measurement is the one thing that does report in the background — it never includes your text, and you can switch it off.)

• The text an action applies to. When you tap a cloud action (Tone, Translate, Reply, Ask AI, Summarize, Paraphrase, Expand, Shorten, Emojify, Continue, Email Writer), we send the text that action operates on — the sentence or paragraph you are working on.

• Limited surrounding text, for two keyboard actions only. Continue and Reply cannot produce a sensible result without knowing what came before, so for those two actions we also send up to 200 characters immediately before and after your cursor. No other keyboard action sends surrounding text. The 200-character limit is enforced in the app and again on our server. This is the only text we transmit that you did not directly select or type.

• What you paste into Email Writer. The Email Writer screen in the app has boxes for the email you're replying to and the points you want covered. Whatever you put in those boxes is sent so the draft makes sense. This is text you typed or pasted yourself, so it is not subject to the 200-character limit above — but it is never collected from anywhere else.

• On-device only. Grammar and spelling "Fix", predictive suggestions and the tone nudge run entirely on your device and are never transmitted.

• Writing samples, only if you add them. If you create a persona and paste sample writing into it, up to six of those samples are sent with your requests so results match your voice. Delete the persona and they stop being sent.

• Usage counts. Basic counters (actions used, characters used today, streak) are stored locally on your device to power the daily allowance and your dashboard. They are never uploaded.

• App integrity token. When available, an anonymous Apple App Attest / Firebase App Check token is sent with cloud requests to help us detect abuse of our endpoint. It does not identify you, and the app works normally whether or not it is present.

We do not collect your name, email, contacts, location or photos. There are no accounts and no login, and the app shows no advertising inside it. We do advertise TypeSense on other platforms and measure which of those ads work — see Advertising and measurement below.

Advertising and measurement

We run ads for TypeSense on Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and Google. To know which ads bring people who actually find the app useful — rather than paying for ads that do nothing — the app includes measurement software from Meta and Google.

This means the app tracks you as Apple defines it, and iOS will ask your permission before it can use your device's advertising identifier. If you decline, the app works exactly the same; measurement simply becomes less precise and falls back to Apple's own privacy-preserving SKAdNetwork.

What these services receive: that the app was installed and opened, that an AI action ran and whether it worked, that you reached the free limit or opened the PRO screen, and — if you subscribe or buy — the product, amount and currency of that purchase, together with your device's advertising identifier if you allowed it.

What they never receive: your text. Not what you typed, selected or pasted, not your prompt, not the AI's reply, not your history, personas or snippets. Also never your name, email, phone number, Apple Account, card or billing details.

• The keyboard contains no advertising or analytics software at all. Nothing measured about your keyboard use is collected while you type — the keyboard leaves only a note of which action ran and whether it worked, and the main app reports that later.

• You can turn the advertising identifier off at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking, and you can turn off usage analytics entirely in TypeSense → Settings → Privacy Center.

• We do not sell your data, and we do not upload contact lists or any customer list to any advertising platform.

Usage analytics

The app uses Google Analytics for Firebase to understand how it is used — which features people open, whether an action succeeded or failed, and how far people get through setup. This is how we find out that a feature is broken or that a screen confuses people.

What it receives: the name of the action you ran (for example "translate"), whether it succeeded, a coarse speed bucket, your app version, device model, OS version and country, a random app-instance identifier, and — only if you allowed tracking when iOS asked — your device's advertising identifier.

What it never receives: your text. Not what you typed, not what you selected, not your prompt, not the AI's reply, not your history, and nothing from your personas or snippets. No name, email, phone number, Apple Account or payment details.

• The advertising identifier is used only if you allow it. iOS asks you once, after your first successful cloud action, and the app passes your answer to both Google and Meta. If you decline, or never answer, neither one collects it.

• The keyboard contains no analytics library at all. When you use an AI action on the keyboard, it leaves only a note of which action ran and whether it worked, which the main app reports later. Nothing you type is involved.

• You can turn it off in Settings → Privacy Center → Share anonymous usage data. Turning it off stops collection immediately and discards anything queued.

How we collect it

Your text is collected in exactly one way: you tap an AI action, and the app sends the text that action needs. There is no background transmission of your text, no scraping of other apps, no keystroke capture, no microphone or camera use, and no location access. The measurement software described above works separately from this and never receives your text.

• Directly from you, in the moment. Text you typed, selected or pasted, sent over an encrypted (TLS 1.2+) connection to our Cloud Function when you invoke an action.

• From your device settings for that action. The tone, target language, creativity level, emoji preference and the host app category (e.g. "messaging"), so the result fits the context.

• From Apple, at the moment of the request. An anonymous App Attest / Firebase App Check integrity token, where available, to protect our endpoint from abuse. It contains no personal information and does not identify you or your device to us.

• Locally only. Your history, personas, snippets, usage counters and settings are written to this app's private storage on your device. They are never uploaded.

• In the background, by the measurement software. The Google and Meta components described under Advertising and measurement report app and purchase events on their own schedule while the app is open, without you tapping anything. They never receive your text, and you can stop them in Settings → Privacy Center → Share anonymous usage data.

How we use it — every use

This is the complete list. We use the data for nothing else.

• To produce the result you asked for. Your text is sent to our Cloud Function, forwarded to OpenAI, and the generated result is streamed back to your device. That is the entire purpose.

• To keep the service working and prevent abuse. Rate limiting and the App Check integrity token protect the endpoint from automated misuse. Operational error logs record that a request failed and why (status codes and timings) — not the content of your text.

• To power the on-device features you see. Local counters drive your daily allowance, streak and dashboard. They stay on your device.

• To measure our own advertising. App and purchase events are reported to Google and Meta so we can tell which of our ads bring people who actually find TypeSense useful. Your text is never part of this — see Advertising and measurement above.

We do not use your text to train any model, ours or anyone else's. We do not sell or rent it. We do not share it for advertising or use it to build a profile of you. We do not share it with any party other than the two processors named below. We do not combine it with data from other sources, because there are no other sources — there is no account.

Full Access

iOS requires "Allow Full Access" for a keyboard to use the network. TypeSense uses Full Access solely to send the text of an AI action to our secure server, as described above. You can use the keyboard for normal typing and on-device Fix without Full Access, and you can turn on Local-only mode in the Privacy Center to block every network request while keeping on-device typing, Fix and suggestions working.

Who processes your text

Your text reaches exactly two parties, in this order, and no others.

• 1. Our server — Google Cloud / Firebase Cloud Functions (Google LLC, acting as our infrastructure sub-processor). Cloud requests go to our Cloud Function, which forwards the text to OpenAI and streams the result back. The function does not store your text; it exists so that our API key is never shipped inside the app.

• 2. OpenAI, L.L.C. — the third-party AI service that generates the result. Text sent for cloud AI actions is processed by OpenAI through its API. OpenAI's privacy policy · OpenAI API data-usage policy.

Equal protection. We have confirmed that each third party above provides the same or equal protection of your data as this policy promises. Specifically: both are engaged as data processors under written terms (Google Cloud and OpenAI data-processing addenda) that limit them to processing data solely on our documented instructions to deliver the result; under OpenAI's API terms, API inputs and outputs are not used to train or improve their models and are retained only transiently for abuse monitoring before deletion; neither is permitted to sell your text, use it for advertising, or disclose it except as required by law; and both are contractually required to maintain security measures and to apply equivalent obligations to any of their own sub-processors. Neither party receives any identifier of you, because the app collects none.

Purchases

TypeSense PRO is sold through Apple's In-App Purchase system. Apple processes the payment; we never see your card, billing address, or Apple Account details. Your PRO status is determined on your device from the receipt Apple signs, and is stored only on your device. We do not operate a purchase server, we keep no record of who has bought anything, and buying PRO does not create an account or change what text the app sends.

Retention

Your AI history is stored locally on your device and capped to a rolling window. You can delete it at any time in Settings → Privacy Center → Delete all history. Cloud requests are not retained by our server beyond the moment of processing.

The usage and advertising measurement events described above are held by Google and Meta under their own retention policies, not by us — we operate no database of our own and keep no record tied to you. Turning the switch off in the Privacy Center stops any further events and discards anything the keyboard had queued.

Children

TypeSense is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.

Your choices

• Give or withdraw permission for cloud AI in Settings → Privacy Center → Cloud AI permission. Withdrawing stops all sharing with OpenAI immediately.

• Turn on Local-only mode in the Privacy Center to block all network requests.

• Delete all history with one tap in the Privacy Center.

• Turn off usage and advertising measurement in Settings → Privacy Center → Share anonymous usage data. This stops both Google's and Meta's components, including their automatic app-open reporting.

• Refuse or revoke the advertising identifier in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking. The app works exactly the same either way.

• Disable Full Access in iOS Settings at any time.

Changes

We may update this policy; material changes will be reflected on this page with a new date.
