Tyler Waltner began playing the saxophone at age 9. He received his first formal jazz education at Bak Middle School of the Arts in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he was selected multiple times for both the Florida All-State Jazz Band and the Palm Beach All-County Jazz and Symphonic Bands.
After moving to the Portland, Oregon area in 2020, Tyler joined the Lakeridge High School Jazz Band. In addition to his high school ensemble, he participated in an out-of-school jazz program for two years. During this time, his jazz trio won 1st place at the 2022 Mt. Hood Jazz Festival and performed at both the Waterfront Blues Festival and the Vanport Mosaic Festival.
Since 2022, Tyler has been selected each year for the Oregon All-State Jazz Band. That same year, he formed his own private combo, OverBridge Jazz, which quickly gained recognition—earning 1st place at the Oregon Jazz Festival, West Salem Jazz Festival, and Mt. Hood Jazz Festival in 2023. The group continues to perform actively throughout the Portland metro area.
In 2024, his new trio JETrio won 1st place at the Oregon Jazz Festival, and in May he was honored as an Outstanding Saxophonist—the top individual award—at the OMEA State Jazz Competition.
Now Tyler continues his studies of jazz performance at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York where he founded the five-piece modern jazz band, Nu Zeta with his fellow classmates. Whenever he is back in the Portland area, Tyler remains an active performer with OverBridge and his own trio or quartet.
