TYCA-Southwest leadership is open to any TYCA-Southwest member in good standing, and we welcome new faces in a variety of capacities. Leadership can look like an elected position, as well as serving as a State Reporter, working with the newsletter, or serving on a committee.
If you’re considering involvement in leadership, please reach out to tyca.southwest@gmail.com.
TYCA-SW Leadership Roles and Committees
TYCA-Southwest includes many appointed leadership roles focused on specific tasks and without term limits.
Current leadership roles include National TYCA Representative, NCTE Representative, Archivist, Awards Coordinator, Political Information Reporter, Communications Coordinator, and State Reporters for the seven states in the TYCA-Southwest Region.
Current committees include Conference Committee, Conference Travel Awards, and Newsletter Editorial Team.
TYCA-Southwest Executive Council
The TYCA-Southwest Executive Council (EC) is made up of elected leadership serving three-year terms with the option to run for a second, consecutive three-year term before having to roll off for one year.
EC members coordinate the major activities of TYCA-Southwest, including, but not limited to, preparing the Annual Conference, creating additional professional development, responding to current issues, and communicating with membership.
Elections occur after the Annual Conference, and current EC members will announce available positions.
The current elected EC positions are Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Chair, and Member-at-Large. Prior conference chairs can serve as voting members on the EC for one year after the conference they chaired.
The Wylie Award is our highest distinction for long and meritorious service to the organization; to be given whenever there are any nominations from which the Special Awards Committee selects one name and recommends it to the Executive Committee.
Each year TYCA–Southwest honors one person for outstanding contributions made to the profession through long–term service. To nominate a colleague for this award, send the nominee’s name and a description of his or her contributions to the profession. You may include comments from others in your nomination as well as any supporting documents (peer feedback, program documents noting service, etc.).
The Susan Faulkner Excellence in Teaching Award is presented at the annual TYCA-SW conference. It honors the memory of Susan Faulkner, professor and coordinator of the English Department at Cedar Valley College in the Dallas County Community College District in Texas. Susan loved teaching, learning, the English language, TYCA-SW, and her grandchildren most of all.
We urge you to nominate a friend or colleague who merits special recognition for his or her hard work and inspired teaching. Send your nominee’s name and a brief description of his or her outstanding work. In addition, you may include brief comments from this individual’s students and peers, if possible.
To nominate yourself or a colleague to either the Wylie or Faulkner award, contact any member of the Executive Commitee.

State Reporters are not elected and continue serve at will. The Executive Committee can have more than one reporter for each state, if sufficient members are willing.
