Background:
As educators, we are always looking to incorporate the newest trends in teaching into our classrooms, but how do we dive below the surface of buzzwords and genuinely reach our students? It is precisely this question that we are hoping to explore.
Discussions surrounding artificial intelligence, metacognition, and other current trends run the risk of remaining abstract and ambiguous; therefore, we are asking for practical presentations that share strategies, assignments, and your learning or research that reflects popular, timely, or enduring concepts in pedagogy. We are seeking enthusiastic presenters who are interested in hands-on and research-based approaches to implementing teaching and learning in the classroom. Let’s share how we reach students where they are.
Proposals may be related but are not limited to any of the following topics:
Culturally-Responsive Teaching
Trauma-Informed Teaching
Active Learning
Co-Requisite Learning
Dual-Enrollment/Dual-Credit
Generative AI
Multimodal Composition
Project-Based Learning
Service Learning
Gamification or Pedagogy of Play
Metacognition
Ungrading: Standards-Based Grading or Labor-Based Grading
Async or Hysync Delivery
Reading/Literacy Approaches
Reading International or English Learners
Reaching Gen Z Students
Preparing for Gen Alpha Students
Have a great idea that’s not even on our radar? We welcome all innovative ideas related to teaching English in the two-year college!
We invite members to propose one of two session types. You may submit an individual proposal or a session proposal with multiple presenters.
For this session type, presenters will share an assignment or activity they have created that goes beyond buzzwords or meets students where they are. Presenters can expect to share the session time with one other assignment presentation.
Successful proposals will explain what inspired the assignment development, how the assignment was integrated into the course to improve student learning situations, and the results. Those interested in this session may want to review the Teaching English in the Two-Year College’s Guidelines for Writing Instructional Notes.
For this session type, presenters will share learning they’ve done related to a topic. Presenters can focus on one or more texts that they have learned from and found helpful for teaching or navigating two-year college challenges. Conference organizers may put together presenters who have overlapping topics.
Successful proposals will explain the topic, how the text(s) shared was beneficial, and a plan for how to guide a discussion about the topic
