On February 8, 2025, Boy Scouts of America will usher in a new era of Scouting. On its 115th birthday, Boy Scouts of America, will formerly change its name to Scouting America. This change comes after surviving a difficult class action lawsuit, welcoming girls into Cub Scouting and Scouting programs, and lastly streamlining organizational structures across councils in the continental and overseas.
Scouting America, as a whole, is committed in affording a Scouting program (a century in the making) to all youth across America. With over 1 million youth, including 176,000 female participants - Scouting America models its programs to time-honored organizations such as the United States Armed Forces, where both males and females are afforded equal opportunities. American Legion Baseball is a national institution, having thrived through a world war, several national tragedies, and times of great prosperity as well as great despair.
The league still stands behind the traditional values upon which it was founded in 1925. American Legion Baseball has taught hundreds of thousands of young Americans the importance of sportsmanship, good health and active citizenship. The program is also a promoter of equality, making teammates out of young athletes regardless of their income levels or social standings. American Legion Baseball has been, and continues to be, a stepping stone to manhood for millions of young men who have gone on to serve their country or community, raise families or play the sport at the highest level.

The American Legion Junior Shooting Sports Program is a gun safety education and marksmanship program that encompasses the basic elements of safety, education, enjoyment and competition. Shooters use the .177 caliber air rifle. Both males and females can participate, through Legion sponsorship; disabled youth are encouraged to join, as competitive shooting is a sport that creates an equal playing field for all competitors. Contact your local Legion post, Sons of The American Legion squadron or Auxiliary unit for information about affiliating as a club or individual.
A pilot program exclusively found in El Paso County, offers youth from each American Legion Post and Auxiliary to visit their local municipal governments. This one week tour is offered to select males and females who are attending Boys or Girls State as their representative for their Posts or Units. Much like the State and National program, youth have an opportunity to meet and observer city council meetings, city operations, and close out the week with meeting with El Paso County leadership. This youth program is in its planning stage and is scheduled to begin Summer of 2026.
High school students who have completed their junior year are competitively selected and sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary units for this program, where they learn about the political process by electing officials for all levels of state government and actively running a mock government. The participants are assigned to mock cities and either the “Federalist Party” or “Nationalist Party.”
At Boys State, participants learn the rights, privileges and responsibilities of franchised citizens. The training is objective and centers on the structure of city, county and state governments. Operated by students elected to various offices, Boys State activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law-enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, choruses and recreational programs
ALA Girls Nation connects students with their peers from across the country, allowing them a unique opportunity to spend time with others who share common interests and those who have different perspectives from their own. The participants leave Washington, D.C. with a deeper understanding of government, a renewed sense of patriotism, and an appreciation for veterans
Since Boys Nation began in 1946, a number of its graduates have been elected to public office, including presidents, congressmen, state governors and state legislators. Many others have been inspired to work for the campaigns of individuals seeking public office.
