Brief History and Profile
The Kapoposang Marine Protected Area is a part of the Spermonde Islands and administratively are included in the Pangkep Regency, South Sulawesi Province. Located in Liukang Tupabbiring District with 2 villages named Mattiro Ujung and Mattiro Matae. There are 6 island in The Kapoposang Marine Protected Area, those are Kapoposang Island, Papandangan Island, Gondong Bali Island, Tambakhulu Island, Pamanggangan Island, and Suranti Island.
In the beginning, based one Decree of the Minister of Forestry Number 588/Kpts-VI/1996 dated 12 September 1996 designated the Kapoposang Islands as an Aquatic Tourism Park with an area of 50,000 hectares and a boundary length of 103 km. Then based on the official report dated March 4, 2009 with numbers BA 01/Menhut-IV/2009 and BA 108/Men.KP/III/2009, the management was handed over to the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and then the nomenclature was changed to become the Kapoposang Archipelago Aquatic Tourism Park (TWP) and the Surrounding Seas through the Decree of the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Number 66/MEN/2009 concerning the establishment of a national water conservation area for the Kapoposang Islands and the surrounding sea in South Sulawesi Province.
Now its management under Balai Kawasan Konservasi Perairan Nasional Kupang with direct officer in Work Region TWP Kep.Kapoposang.

It's sea turtle spawning period to lay down their eggs during December to February and June-August in Kapoposang island. Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) and Hawksbill Sea Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) are often found during those time.
The MPA's officer of Kapoposang MPA work together with local people to restore and rehab the coral ecosystem use web spider method, concrete method, and artificial reef called "roti buaya". The site of coral rehabilitation located in east side of Kapoposang island.
The Kapoposang Marine Protected Area can be reached from Makassar in Losari Beach or Paotere Harbour by speed boat by 1-2 hour.
