In the Biblical chapter, Exodus, the Lord gives instructions to Moses signifying the beginning of the Jewish holiday known as the Passover. He informs them that families that do this will be passed over by God, and their first born child will not be struck down. Doing this was seen as a sign of obedience and having confidence in God. Malcolm Little was born on May 19th, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska as one of eight children. Malcolm's father, Earl Little worked as an activist under the Black nationalist party lading to his family to receive death threats from white extremists. The threats caused the Little family to move several times before Malcolm was 4 years of age. During the family's time in Michigan, their home was burned to the ground. A couple years after the arson, Earl Little was murdered. In the 1950s, Malcolm converted to Islam and changed his last night from "Little" to "X" because he believed Little to be has slave name. In the early 1960s, Malcolm left the Nation of Islam and started his own Muslim organization. In May of 1964, he founded the Organization of Afro-American Unity, whose focused moved from civil rights to human rights.
