What is better than a tasty treat?
A tasty treat that is accompanied with a feel good story of an empowered woman, that’s what!
I’m a shameless Instagram scroller and one day I stumbled across the Mama Bongi page and found myself falling down the figurative rabbit hole as I read more of her story.
In African culture, the title ‘Mama’ is given as a term of respect and is prefixed to a woman’s name. On her website, she describes her cookies as being the best choc-chip cookies and that is by no means an over-statement. I have mad respect for this woman’s abilities with cookie dough and choc-chips, that’s for sure. And I respect her ambition and drive and the business she has worked hard to build and grow the past few months.
Mama Bongi is based in Cape Town and I have followed her story from afar, watching enviously as people shared their first tastings of her wares. I have watched as she’s shared how her cookie-baking business has given her opportunities of which she’d never even dreamed, and I’ve watched as she’s shared how her business has grown exponentially, with different stores around Cape Town beginning to stock her brown bags of goodness. In fact, the other day I watched as she shared that she had been featured on News24, and feeling invested in her journey (having followed since the start) I excitedly shared this on Instagram stories, mentioning that I couldn’t wait to get to Cape Town and to finally get my hands on my own bag.
And that is the power of social media! Soon after sharing, a friend from Cape Town reached out saying that she was heading to KZN for work, and would I like for her to pick up a bag for me. Um, yes! Please!
So the journey of Mama Bongi’s choc-chip cookies all the way to humble Pietermaritzburg began. They travelled by air to KZN, and were delivered to a colleague in Hillcrest who then brought them up to Pietermaritzburg for me. After such a journey, they had better deliver, right?
I stashed them into my bag and brought them home to enjoy in peace on the couch with a cuppa tea. Wow! These cookies, though. They are all kinds of decadent. These cookies are generously sized and one is all you need to feel as though your sweet craving has been satisfied. They’re chunky and chock-a-block with choc-chips. The dough to choc-chip ratio is more than generous but they’re not at all overly sweet. They’re the perfect accompaniment to tea and to end a busy day in the classroom. In fact, I’d look forward all day to returning home to sit on the couch with my tea and cookie and was disappointed when my bag came to its end.
Last week, Mama shared that she’d sent an order to Pietermaritzburg and that they wouldn’t share their stockist until they’d started seeing photos being shared of the cookies in store. I found them! Pick ‘n Pay at Athlone Circle is stocking these brown bags of goodness! I love that. This store has a real heart for supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses, and now Mama Bongi’s choc-chip cookies is one of their new yummy products.
Check out Mama Bongi’s website to see where you can find a bag of cookies for yourself (she does deliver to main centres if you, like me, must get your hand on some of these), and if you’re in Pietermaritzburg, get off to Pick ‘n Pay at Athlone Circle, visit the bakery counter and pick up a bag of your own. If you’re a mom (or girlfriend or wife) stash these to be enjoyed in a quiet space alone. Trust me, you’re not going to readily share these!
A bag of cookies goes for R50.00 and is well worth every penny. Not only are they that delicious, but the money is contributing to the building of a dream - and that is priceless!
