21st Annual Twin Cities Coop Tour
A self-guided, totally free tour of some of the coops and flocks living in our backyards!
Whether you already have chickens, want to have chickens, or are just curious about how this whole backyard chicken thing works, join us on the Twin Cities Coop Tour for inspiration, information, and to have fun! Here's how it works: chicken owners from around the Metro sign up to volunteer their coops, we compile the host's addresses and names into an accessible map, then on Saturday, October 10th between 10 am and 4 pm, you can visit as many of the coops as you want to! This is a free, self-guided event, so all you need to attend is the map which is available below and is updated with additional tour stops as hosts continue to volunteer.

Come right through the gate to the left of the house entrance to visit our 4 chickens. The coop is second hand, the run is a work in progress, but their beauty and silliness are undeniable. One of our girls is a heritage breed, rehoused from a 1860's living history farm, the other 3 modern breeds from a local source.

We have a shed style coop, 8x12ft, currently have 19 chickens including 1 rooster. We use electric netting to range our chickens and rotate the fence. Our chicken coop is in the backyard.

Access: Best entry into the backyard is from the alley on the south side of the house. Coop and run are alongside the garage - you can’t miss it. There will be a tour sign outside our fence.
About Our Hens: We have two generations in our flock that we raised from chicks, and each are a different chicken breed. The older girls are 3 and new girls turned 1 this July.
About Our Coop: We built it! It’s sized for 6 hens. We chose this corner for the yard as it was furthest from the neighbors and being up against the garage made construction a bit easier.
Aspects we love that make cleaning and maintenance easier: you can get a wheelbarrow through the door of the run; one side of the coop swings open; nesting box accessible from outside; water & food near door. We use a sand covering for the floor and replenish it every other year. We buried hardware cloth (the metal mesh) a few inches down all the way around the coop to protect from digging predators and topped with medium sized rocks.

I have 5 hens (all different breeds) that have taken over my backyard! I built the coop and run with a vague idea, too many trips to the hardware store, and the help of a friend who couldn't watch me use power tools because it made him too nervous. Street parking on Matilda is fine- there are some front steps and then a little path to the back gate! If stairs are a concern, there is a little space for parking in the alley.
