Based on what they do, there are four basic types of TV mounts. You choose the style based on what features you want or need. Fixed. A fixed mount hangs your TV like a picture frame on the wall. No movements, no frills. Right where you put it, it stays. The least expensive are fixed mounts. They are good for places where a display will only be seen from one spot or where no adjustments will be needed.

Tilt. With a tilt mount, you can tilt the TV up or down to find the best viewing angle and avoid glare from windows or other sources of light. This type of mount is the most common. They move just enough to get the best picture while still staying out of sight. Most of the time, these are used anywhere you would mount a TV. You get the idea: bedroom, living room, kitchen, theater, etc.

Cantilever. Cantilever mounts are a bit more complicated. They are also called "arm" or "full motion" mounts. They are put together with joints that let you move the TV away from the wall. Most of these mounts also have a tilt feature. You might hear or see words like "dual-arm" or "double-stud." "Dual-arm" means that it has two arms that extend from the wall. These are usually for large or extra-large TVs (these have a wall plate that fits across two wall studs, to help distribute the weight of larger displays).

The different terms can be scary, but with a few words from this glossary, anyone can choose the right mount. Cantilever mounts are great for when you want to put one TV in a room with more than one seating area. If your floor plan is open, you can mount the TV in the family room and pull it out so you can watch it from the kitchen.

Specialty. Specialty mounts are for application-unique situations. Some of the most common kinds are desk mounts, under-cabinet mounts, corner mounts, ceiling mounts, and pull-out mounts for cabinets. If you need something so specific, you should probably ask a trained expert for help.

How to Choose a Model - How do you know which style will work for your TV now that you know what the different styles are? There are mounting holes on the back of the TV that the mount fits into. The electronics industry is trying to make these holes the same size across all brands, but there are still a lot of brands with their own sizes. Most of the time, the sizes will be written in metric units, like 200mm x 200mm, 75x100, or 400x400.

You will either need to know the mounting hole pattern for your TV or talk to a professional who can figure out the size from your TV's brand and model number. Many mounts now have a size range guide, like "fits most 32"-47" flat panels," but it's always a good idea to check that your TV isn't the one that doesn't fit the "most."
