Post-doc position in adaptive optics vision research

The lab of William Tuten at the UC Berkeley School of Optometry is looking for a postdoctoral fellow to study human vision using adaptive optics retinal imaging and visual psychophysics. The primary goal of the lab is to understand how signals from individual cones are processed by downstream visual circuits that support spatial and color vision. To achieve this, the lab uses a custom adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscope to image and stimulate cone photoreceptors in the central retina. We seek to understand how the percepts elicited by single-cone stimulation are shaped by neural features of the visual pathway. We also employ computational methods to investigate how pre- and post-retinal factors combine to limit visual performance.

The ideal candidate will have experience in one or more of the following areas: visual psychophysics, visual neuroscience, development and use of high-resolution retinal imaging platforms.

Additional requirements include:

  • Doctorate in one of the following (or related) disciplines: Vision Science, Neuroscience, Optics, Biomedical Engineering, Psychology, Computer Science

  • Programming skills (Minimum: Matlab or Python)

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

UC Berkeley is located in the San Francisco Bay Area, a region with abundant cultural, scientific, and recreational opportunities. The Vision Science Group at UC Berkeley comprises a diverse and active group of labs studying vision from a number of perspectives. The successful candidate will join a thriving imaging community on the Berkeley campus, and will have the opportunity for direct interactions with collaborators with expertise in biomedical and computational imaging techniques. The Tuten lab is also affiliated with the recently-launched Center for Innovation in Vision and Optics (CIVO), which supports scientific collaboration between member labs and industry partners.

Applicants should contact William Tuten (wtuten@berkeley.edu) with a CV and letter of interest.

The start date for the position is flexible. Salary will be commensurate with skills and experience.

The University of California, Berkeley is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
