The University of Arizona’s College of Education, in partnership with Pima County Public School Districts, provides a unique and fully inclusive transition opportunity for students (aged 18 to 21), who have intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Project FOCUS (Focusing on Opportunities with Community and University Support) uses a two-year, dual-enrollment model to support access to the university’s academic courses, campus and community internships and collegiate social events to foster independence, self-determination, community engagement and competitive employment for all our students. Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive a Work Readiness Certificate, comprised of a minimum of 24 college credits (including courses and internships hours). Project FOCUS collaborates with various state agencies such as the Department of Developmental Disabilities and Vocational Rehabilitation.

Students take a wide range of UArizona courses on campus; course selection is aligned with career goals and/or personal interests. Students are provided instructional support in career readiness, academic coursework, campus social life and self-determination by UArizona faculty, with support from the Disability Resource Center (DRC). Staff ensure that university-level academic content is accessible to all of our students through adapted materials, modified curricula and individualized assessments. Project FOCUS is a mobile 1:1 iPad program designed to enhance learning, improve communication, increase independence and encourage social relationships.
During their two years on campus, students complete an employment-based program of studies that encompasses many career-ready skills: job exploration, resume writing, interviewing, money management, networking and self-advocacy. Across their two years, students will also work at multiple internship sites (both on- and off-campus). Within these integrated workplaces, students improve multiple employability skills: professionalism, communication, problem solving, time management, teamwork and leadership.
In addition to the academic and career skills students are developing in Project FOCUS, they also have the exciting option of participating in all of the collegiate social events offered by UArizona (including sporting events, the arts and theater, Spring Fling, etc.). These inclusive social interactions promote strong communication, self-determination and independent living skills. Students also improve their mobility and navigation skills by traversing our 387-acre campus daily, practicing their independent travel. Many students participate in off-campus internship experiences which can involve navigating public transportation (bus & streetcar).
Throughout their experiences in Project FOCUS, students are supported by same-age peer mentors who are trained by highly qualified staff in using best practices while engaging with students.
