The TYR Turning the Tide Swim a Thon is a community fundraising event completely organized by teens and held annually each spring to support Asphalt Green’s efforts to provide free swim instruction to local children and families facing financial barriers.
How We Started
Ali Wright, a lifelong swimmer, was inspired to start the Turning the Tide Swim-a-Thon after learning about the country's first all-Black swim team. In her research, she discovered disparities in swim education and the life-or-death impact of learning to swim. Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death in children 14 and under, and the statistics become more staggering when you zoom in on socioeconomic status.
Ali believes financial situations should not be the limiting factor in whether or not a kid learns to swim, and she decided to do something about it.
May is Water Safety Month, and what better way to celebrate than by joining in our effort. Last year, we raised over $75,000 thanks to the hard work of our swimmers and the generosity of over 500 donors.
With your help, we hope to raise even more in 2026!
