When planning a reading program for your classes or school, consider the following points before you begin:
Thanks to wonderful teacher Yulia at Almog School in Eilat for sharing this excellent report about her English Libraries' opening event. Truly inspired!
Rabin School - Netivot
Teachers: Liraz Lazmi and Shelly Atia
When children read for pleasure, when they get “hooked on books," they acquire, involuntarily and without conscious effort, nearly all of the so-called "language skills" many people are so concerned about: They will become adequate readers, acquire a large vocabulary, develop the ability to understand and use complex grammatical constructions, develop a good writing style, and become good (but not necessarily perfect) spellers. Although free voluntary reading alone will not ensure attainment of the highest levels of literacy, it will at least ensure an acceptable level. Without it, I suspect that children simply do not have a chance. (Krashen Stephen 1993:84)
We will present the "English Libraries" program to our pupils with a short explanation and presentation of the new books.
Our new English books will be kept in our English classroom in a special corner and pupils from 1st to 6th grades will have access to it.
Time devoted to silent reading will be about 15 minutes at the beginning or end of a lesson, once a week.
Individual reading
Pupils will select their own books, according to individual interest and appropriate level of difficulty.
Monitoring progress is important both for the pupil and teacher, and will be done by:
- A reading file in which pupils answer a short quiz of LOTS questions. In addition they will write notes, impressions and reactions to their reading, and the teacher will briefly respond.
- having the pupils fill out a form:

Shared Reading
In April we will start our "Shared Reading" program - all the pupils will read the same book. In this program only 5th and 6th graders will take part. Sometimes the teacher will read to the class parts of the book to keep everyone interested.
In addition to the time devoted to silent reading, we will devote another 5-10 minutes to answer 3 different questions based on the books we are reading together in class.
Motivating pupils to read for pleasure on a regular basis will be done by:
Create a “reading atmosphere” by reading outside the class.
In lower grades reading will be done by the teacher sitting in a circle. "Story time".
The teacher's role is as a model reader, doing what the pupils are doing - reading a book.
Pupils select their own books, according to individual interest and appropriate level of difficulty.
At the end of year pupils will produce work based on their reading.
Each pupil will choose his favorite book and present it to the class by one of the options below:
· Play one favorite scene from the book.
· Create a poster or ad for the book
· Make a model of a scene from the book
· Write a comic strip
· Digital representation of books (video / power point / online story book)
· Create a game
· Write an alternative beginning or ending to the book
This work will be submitted on May 22nd 2018
All work (as well pics and digital presentations) will be displayed at the entrance to the school and on the school website.
Elementary A Ilut - Northern Region
Teacher: Yasmin Abo Ras
Books will be kept in the school library.
The program is for pupils in grades 4-6.
Teachers will explain the following reading program during their lessons.
A careful eye will be kept on the pupils' reading progress.
Ten minutes at the beginning of each lesson will be devoted to silent reading and the pupils will be encouraged to speak about their books to their classmates.
Pupils will be required to submit a creative written or oral response to the books once every two weeks. These may take the form of comic strips, paintings or models of scenes from the book, interviews with authors and creation of games based on the book.
Each pupil will receive a bracelet / wrist band. For every book he reads, he will receive a charm to attach to it.
The pupils' work will be displayed at the entrance to the school, on the school website and on the school website.
Ramat Modiim School - Chashmonaim
Teachers: Debbie Sedley and Michal Amzallag
We will do Shared Reading for one lesson each week.
Pre- Reading Activities : Vocabulary games introducing the new words that will appear in the book.
Post-Reading Activities: Students will choose between drawing a poster or comic strip relating to stories, or acting out some parts of them
Each pupil will keep a Reading Diary where he'll have to update his reading progress and write a regular summary about what he's read
We will organize a fun activity at school near the end of the year to celebrate our pupils' collective reading achievements
We will ask responsible students to be in charge of tracking how much reading is being done at home and to chart it on colorful charts. Pupils who progress will be awarded prizes.
