Lawn Care Guide: Turf Grass Lawns in Iowa
Spring Lawn Care
Spring Clean Up (de-thatch & bag)
Removal of debris/leaves from the lawn and around your landscaping, Dethatching (removal of thatch/dead grass), Bagging. Lets your lawn breathe and not compete with dead grass, allows fresh grass to grow more easily in the spring, provides added sunlight, and keeps grass and soil healthy.
Keeps the lawn from developing excess moisture on the grass, which can lead to fungi growth and a breeding ground for mosquitoesModerate thatch formation is a normal development in lawns; however, problems can occur when the thatch layer is excessive. Removal of thatch improves the growing conditions for the turfgrass plants and results in a healthier, more vigorous lawn.
Spring Broadleaf Spray
If you have broadleaf weeds like dandelions that you want to eliminate in the spring you will want to mow the yard twice first. This will help remove dead tissue, and ensure the plants are actively growing. (Source: Iowa State Extension & Outreach)
Spring Crabgrass Preventative Fertilizer (May)
A key to the successful control of crabgrass in lawns is the correct timing of the pre-emergence herbicide application. A pre-emergence herbicide must be applied before the crabgrass seeds germinate. If the material is applied too early, crabgrass seeds that germinate late in the season will not be controlled. If applied too late, some crabgrass seeds will have already germinated. Fall Broadleaf Spray
Fall (late September to early November) is the best time to control perennial broadleaf weeds in the lawn with broadleaf herbicides. In fall, perennial broadleaf weeds are transporting food (carbohydrates) from their foliage to their roots in preparation for winter. Broadleaf herbicides applied in fall will be absorbed by the broadleaf weed’s foliage and transported to the roots along with the carbohydrates, resulting in the destruction of the broadleaf weeds.
