I used to volunteer at the Treasure Hill Guanyin 觀音 temple as the head chef for big events. When I arrived, there would be so many people already gathered that I would rush to the kitchen without first praying to her. One night, I dreamt it was raining hard. I had just gone up the stairs from the bottom of Treasure Hill to the main walkway. I was at a crossroads — to one side, the Guanyin temple; to the other, the grocery store. Goddess Guanyin was testing me — which way should I go to hide from the rain? I chose her temple. Thereafter when volunteering I always made sure to pray to her first and tell her I arrived.
