Elastomeric coating is a durable and elastic coating designed to provide protection to the surface. It is usually made of materials which include acrylic, silicone, and urethane.

It is elastic and can withstand temperature changes and external pressure. The coating's ability to expand and contract makes it durable. It is designed to be water-resistant, weather-proof and adds reflectability to the roof. Ideally, it secures your roof against any possible damage and makes it last longer.

Applying the roof coating

Examine

Start examining the surface of terrace for any cracks, blisters, and exposed foam. Additionally, analyze the condition, before starting with the coating process. If it is seriously damaged then it needs to be repaired before coating it.

Measure the dimensions of the target area to have an estimate of the work. Also, it gives you an idea of the amount of coating material required. If you're not sure, you can hire a roofing expert to get an accurate estimate.

Apply the coat

After examining the surface, applying the coating basically involves three steps:

1) Cleaning

Terrace usually has dust, dirt, and oil deposited on the outer surface. When the elastomeric coating is applied, these particles prevent it from sticking. Clean it using a TSP solution to remove the deposits and dry the surface before applying the first coat.

2) Seal it

Use a sealant to fill any cracks or blisters. In cases of ponding, taking professional help is advised to ensure proper sealing. While choosing the product, it should be ensured that it has the required adhesive properties.

3) Apply

When the surface is dry apply the coating using a paint roller. Spread it evenly and use a brush to reach areas not approachable with a roller. Keep the first coat thick and follow it with layers of thin coats.

Ideally, white roof coatings are great to start with. Dark colors should be avoided as they absorb more heat. Light colors absorb less heat and keep the surface cool in summers.
