I am so glad that you are considering joining the IUP Tuba and Euphonium Studio! If you are interested in joining the studio, I welcome you to fill out the form below. I'd love to give you a lesson, free of charge, so you can see what it is like to be an IUP musician. Students can choose to pursue a major in music, including education, performance, or a general music degree that includes a specialization in music industry. Students are also welcome to participate in the IUP Tubaphonium Ensemble and other IUP ensembles as non-majors.
Dates can be found on the IUP Department of Music, Theatre and Dance website for prospective students.
You should prepare two solos or etudes that feature both lyrical and technical styles. When choosing repertoire, find solos or etudes that display your technical and musical abilities at an appropriate difficulty level. The IUP Music Audition Procedures can be found here.
Yes. Incoming students can earn scholarships for both academic and music achievement. Also, the studio has two studio-specific scholarships, the Jim Self Tuba Scholarship and the Gary and Kaye Bird Euphonium Scholarship. Both scholarships are awarded to outstanding continuing students (sophomore-senior level) for their musical achievement and service to the studio.
It is not necessary for you buy an instrument before you begin attending IUP. However, you are encouraged to buy your own instrument as soon as is economically feasible. This is for a couple reasons. First of all, owning your own horn shows a level of commitment to your chosen profession. Secondly, while we do have school-owned instruments that are available to tuba and euphonium majors, we have a limited supply. Purchasing your own instrument will alleviate the demand for these school-owned instruments.
All students should own a quality metronome and tuner.
For more information please see the IUP Tuba and Euphonium Studio Syllabus.
