Where "Bless You" Came From
（「ブレッス・ユー」の由来）

こんなやり取りを聞いたことがありますか？

みなさん、こんにちは！アリシャです。津幡町の国際交流員（CIR）です。

今日は英語を使う国での、くしゃみへの一般的な返事について紹介したいと思います。
それは「ブレッス・ユー（Bless you）」です。

もともと「ブレッス・ユー」は、もっと長いフレーズから来ています。
それは「ゴッド・ブレッス・ユー（God bless you）」です。

これは、くしゃみをした人に「お大事に」という気持ちを伝えるときに使う言葉です。
礼儀正しい返事は「サン・キュー（Thank you）」です。

私は以前、咳をした人にも「ブレッス・ユー」と言う友達がいました。
しかし、咳をした人にそう言うのは普通ではないので、あまりおすすめはしません。

私の昔のフランス語先生は「ゴッド・ブレッス・ユー」の自分で信じていた由来の話はよくしてました。

中世ヨーロッパでは、多くの人々がとても宗教的でした。この時代にはペストという命にかかわる病気があり、ネズミなどの齧歯動物についたノミによって広まりました。この病気は「黒死病」とも呼ばれていました。

人々は健康と神様の守りを願い、「ゴッド・ブレッス・ユー」と言うようになったそうです。

少し暗い由来ですが、今では「ブレッス・ユー」はただの礼儀正しい言葉として使われていて、英語を話す社会に深く染み込んでいます。

英語を話す国だけでなく、くしゃみの後に何かを言う文化は、いろいろな国で見られます。

例えば、ノルウェー、スウェーデン、デンマークでは、人々は「プロシット（Prosit）」と言います。
「プロシット」はラテン語から来ていて、「（健康が）良くなりますように」という意味です。

もしカナダやアメリカに行く機会があったら、くしゃみをした人に「ブレッス・ユー」と言ってみませんか？

それとも、ちょっとユニークな言葉ですが、「ゲズントハイト（Gesundheit）」と言ってみませんか？

「ゲズントハイト」は、くしゃみをした人に言うドイツ語の言葉で、「健康」という意味です。ドイツ語ですが、カナダやアメリカでも使われています。

Today, I would like to talk about the common response in English speaking countries to hearing someone sneeze: saying "Bless you."

"Bless you" comes from the longer phrase "God bless you," and you say it to wish someone well.
The polite response is to say "thank you."

I once had a friend who said "Bless you" when I coughed too, but I wouldn't recommend it because it's not as common.

My old French teacher would often tell us what she believed to be the origin story of "God Bless you."

She said that during the Middle Ages, when most people were very religious, the Bubonic Plague was spreading. The Bubonic plague was a disease spread by fleas that traveled on rodents. This disease was also called the Black Death, because it killed millions of Europeans during the Middle Ages. People would say "God Bless you" to hope for good health, and for God to watch over those who were about to die soon.

While these are grim origins, it is now just considered the polite thing to say when someone sneezes. It has been embedded into English speaking society.

There are other responses to sneezes in non-English speaking countries too.

For example, in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, people say "Prosit!" after someone sneezes.

Prosit comes from the Latin word prōsit and it means "may it be good (to your health)."

If you are ever in Canada or the USA and someone sneezes, maybe try saying "Bless you!"
Or, if you're feeling adventurous, try saying "Gesundheit!"

Gesundheit is the German word for Health and it is used in response to a sneeze not only in Germany but also in Canada and the USA.
