An Informative Introduction to Trunking
This blog is your informative guide to trunking, what it is and why it is used in almost any building you have ever been in. There are many different kinds of electrical trunking as well as accessories to go along with it. If you have exposed wires and are unsure of how to safely and properly cover them, consider the use of trunking.
What is Trunking?
Cable trunking is used in areas of a building where there are exposed wires and cables, especially when there is a high amount like in offices with lots of computers. It is a protective routing and covering system, this means that the cables are out of the way of people and organised to prevent any damage that may occur to them.
This is important as it protects the cables from any dust, humidity or other damage. The use of trunking is also more aesthetically pleasing, giving the cables a cleaner and more tidy look. The most commonly used and universal cable coverings are apac1 and apac2, this is because they are easy to install and can fit around most standard sized cables. Apac1 and apac2 also have a simple design, meaning that they can easily blend into most rooms without standing out too much.
Accessory Boxes and Mini Trunking
Installing accessory boxes is a mini trunking technique used for the mounting of switches and sockets on a wall. This is used for simple wiring systems in a building like a switch for the light or a plug socket you can put your charger in, often these things are not noticed but they are an extremely convenient way to sort cables that come out of a wall. These boxes prevent the cables from being damaged and can even protect a person from an accidental electric shock from exposed cables. There are lots of different sizes available of accessory boxes so that you can easily find one that will protect your cables and will neatly fit on your wall. Mini trunking refers to when there is a small amount of cables or small sized cables that need to be organised and protected. You can also get self-adhesive mini trunking which has an easy installation as all you need to do is adhere it to the place on the wall where you want the cables to go and conceal the cables inside. This is suitable for a more temporary space or if you are installing the trunking yourself and don’t want to mark the wall.
Dado Trunking
Dado Trunking is a more specialised type of trunking that is mostly used for certain suitable environments such as offices and shops. Unlike regular electrical trunking, dado trunking is specially designed for the transportation of data. This means that this type of cable trunking systems are made with lots of cables in mind and lots of different directions that they need to be sorted to. There are different parts that go into dado trunking to make sure that the cables are sorted properly, the centre compartment of this trunking being a black box which is used to provide power circuits. Other compartments are used for data connectors and communications. It can be installed at desk height or at the height of your skirting boards depending on what is the most suitable for you.
All of these are key aspects of trunking, this is a very helpful way of keeping all of your cables organised while also preventing them from getting damaged and stop working in the future. It is also a good way to keep others safe from electric shock or even tripping over these.
